good film. aside from the worrying fact that gwen looks alot like davey havok, it's an eye-opener. i can't understand why anybody would feel the need to kill someone because of their sexual preference... i guess there's alot of prejudice. pretty much anyone slightly religious/pio...( read more)us or over the age of 30 can't seem to accept homosexuality. my only complaint is that it ended rather abruptly. you didn't see any of what gwen went through at the hands of those creeps and then all of a sudden she's boxed up and six feet under. maybe i'm just a nihilist and wanna see the pain and suffering. maybe sam peckinpah should've been ressurected from the grave to direct this one

This movie made me cry. I felt like I actually knew her. How people could do something so hurtful...I will never understand. She was so beautiful...it's just not fair.

Based on a true story. As a young boy, Eddie Araujo always felt different somehow. She started putting on her mom's makeup and wearing her mom's clothes, which her mom found odd. By the time she entered her teen years, Eddie could no longer hide the fact that she was a lot differ...( read more)ent, that she was meant to be female and not male. When she finally accepted it and with her mom's eventual support, Eddie changed her name to Gwen and started to live life as female until a tragic night changed everything. If the Gwen Araujo Story has a weakness it's that their are no really developed secondary characters in the film. It is dominated completely by Mercedes Ruehl as Gwen's mom and J.D. Pardo as Gwen. But these are two very powerful performances indeed. Ruehl is a loving, caring mother whose own life experiences have left her ill equipped to comprehend what her child is dealing with. As for Gwen, she's an innocent adolescent, but a brave one. Not comprehending why she's the object of such hate and ridicule, but determined to present herself to the world as she sees herself. Pardo does a great job in capturing both parts of Gwen's character. This excellent film deals with a major societal problem regarding transsexual behavior. We saw it in "TransAmerica," and "Boys Don't Cry." While the ending is tragic, the film is well acted and creates a disturbing picture of what transsexual people have to endure in our society.

Great movie! I've seen this on the Lifetime Channel the first time, and it was a deeply touching story about a transgendered teen.
"Acceptance", such a simple word but action is so difficult. If only it weren't so.

    Mercedes Ruehl is magnificent.
