This film got off to such an awful start that I immediately regretted buying it. It didn't turn out to be a masterpiece, but it contains some very moving scenes and uniquely interesting character dynamics. Structurally it's a little clunky, and there are moments when it feels forced and pretentious, but overall it's a worthwhile watch.
I realy enjoyed the movie but with most books made in to movies the book is much better. But this is still a great movie. If you enjoyed it check out the book.
Colin Farrell's performance in this film truly shows how incredible of an actor he really is. It is such a great story from start to finish and just overall enjoyable to watch.
What a disappointment. Pretty abysmal adaptation of a GREAT novel. And the author, Michael Cunningham, wrote his own screenplay! The biggest injustice? Morphing two of the characters into one and thus, changing the ending. Read the book instead.
I liked the begining the most. And the brief duet between the two main people near the end. Colin Farrell did a great job, it was a very different role for him and he did it well. However I found the movie a little boring or slow at times. But good acting.
A great little character piece. loses a star for including a sub plot that I hoped they would avoid as its become cliche, won't say what it is here to avoid spoilers, and it needs an extra quarter hour.
The young cast were fantastic and when Colin Farrell stepped in to the main characters shoes I was worried that the film was going to plummet. Initially my worries appeared to be confirmed, but he turns in a very nuanced performance. Great stuff. Same goes for the rest of the cast, but he was my main worry.
Nice little film with amazing performances. I love it... I ADORE it. But it's flawed. The screenplay is incredible at the beginning... sadly, after the first half hour, it starts to go down and finally it crashes and burns in the last 5 minutes. Colin Farrell 2nd best performance to date ("Tigerland" will always be his "Godfather") and a surprisingly warm Sissy Spacek with a charming Dallas Roberts and a wacky Robin Wright Penn is not enough. Watch it as acting lessons from great teachers... but that's all. I won't stop loving it anyways
I love this movie because it asks the question 'what makes a family?' in this day and age where if youre not the 'norm' it feels you don't have the right to exisit. Beautiful performances from Colin and Sissy. Worth watching.
(2004 Director: Michael Mayer) A Home at the End of the World, an intimate film based on a novel by Michael Cunningham (Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Hours). Oh stars one of my personal favorite actresses, Sissy Spacek AND the amazingly talented Colin Farrell. Preposterous lifestyles
Excellent film that i've been waiting for ages to see. Finally managed to get a hold of a copy and not a disappointment in the slightest. It has a lot to say about modern living that really is important in today's society. Dallas Roberts gave an excellent performance as Jonathon. And Robin Wright Penn was excellent as always but it has to Colin Farrell that stole the show. This character proves his acting ability really well because the character is very much far removed from what he is like in real life. His character is innocent and slightly naive so you can't help but fall in love with him. It's an amazing film that really should be seen by everyone.
really loved this film.i would recomend anyone watch this film rather than the over rated crap that brokeback mountain was. colin farrell finally proves he can act with this film.good performances from erik smith and harris allan as the younger versions of the two male lead characters.my olny quibble is i felt the film ended to soon,i want to know what happens to the characters,it felt unfinished. i would really like to read the book now, just to see if its any differant.
In 1971 Alvin Toffler wrote a book called "Future Shock", a remarkably prescient look at the kind of changes our rapidly changing world could expect. Part of the book discussed the future of relationships and family, predicting gay marriage and "non-traditional" family dynamics that could work just as well as a traditional family. This movie is exactly what he was writing about. This movie makes the case that while it can perhaps get a bit more emotionally messy, where there's love, there's family. Thankfully, all three of the main characters, while complex, are still likeable. No hipsters in the bunch, so whether you're gay, straight, or other, you can relate to them without feeling that they're too cool for school. I've really enjoyed Dallas Roberts since watching him in "The L Word" and "Joshua". Robin Wright Penn is great and strong in a role that could very well have marginalized a less adept actress. The big surprise for me here is Colin Farrell. Like Russell Crowe, it's hard for me to seperate the attitude from the actor, but his role as Bobby in this gives me newfound respect for his acting abilities. There is not a hint of egotism here. His Bobby is an open book, a wide-eyed innocent you can't help but fall in love with. While the end was a bit too abrupt for my taste, this was a great, entertaining drama.
Sometimes you realize that Colin Farrel can be a good actor. This is a beautiful story and loved the way they capture of the feel of the 1980's village in new york city. Perfect.
An unusual love story that will surprise you. Colin Farrell plays a bisexual man, having feelings for two of his friends - a woman and a man. A Home At The End Of The World will surprise all Farrell critics who ever dared to say he is a one-trick-poney.
Love knows no boundaries in this movie, but eventually we find that the two male characters have a connection that just can't be broken. One of those depressing movies that you just have to love as you sit there and bawl your eyes out. I really adored this movie.
Beautifully shot and with truly great performances, the problem lies in that everything in the story seems to happen for no reason at all. The movie feels as a long transition scene, a filler, for a major story that is never told.
Excellent movie! I've watched this movie 4 or 5 times now. I thought I had already rated it. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Colin Farrell plays Bobby, a bisexual guy who falls in love with his childhood friend (and step-brother) Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) who is gay and Jonathan's female roommate Clare (Robin Wright Penn). The 3 of them start a family together, buy a house and have a baby but along with the good times comes some bad and very sad times. Sissy Spacek does a great job as the mother of Jonathan also. Very heart-touching movie. A tear-jerker for sure. But some hot scenes also!
This was rather an interesting movie per say. I loved the story and the relationship that these 3 shared through out the movie. I wish I would of read the book first so I could of gotten a better feel for it, but all in all it was great.
this is actually a very good movie about three friends who grow up together and then decide to move into this house in a small town and start a new life. the movies travels from childhood to adulthood and follows their lifes. it is very entertaining and the characters are great. a box of tissues is needed, there are some strong scenes in the movie.
