À l'intérieur (Inside) Reviews and Ratings

The French are sick, crazy bastards. Never for a second think they're really cheese eating surrender monkeys - these monkeys are more likely to tear off your skin, fashion an Ed Gein prophylactic and fuck you to death with it.

The last messed up French horror film I saw before t...( read more)his was Haute Tension/High Tension/Switchblade Romance, and while it certainly lived up to it's name, it also managed to be incredibly disturbing - we see a man fucking a severed head. Inside follows this proud tradition in ways I never thought I would see in such a slick, polished production.

The gyst of Inside is, a young pregnant woman is involved in a car crash that kills her partner and she is left to carry (and one day raise) the child alone and this would be a troubling time for any woman - but her struggles are only just beginning as she is soon terrorized by a demented bitch who has every intention of carving out her child and taking it.

The violence is grueling, I have not seen gore this intense in many years and unlike many gore movies - it's not fun. You don't want to laugh with joy when you see some of the insane things they pull off in this film because the atmosphere is so dark and oppressive that there is genuine menace to the acts, it's a horrifying and disgusting film but it's also incredibly scary. Many moments throughout the film will linger in your mind, making you eager to reach out and turn on a light after it's done but it is the final moments that will haunt your thoughts - a chillingly subdued moment, grimly framed, the perfect bookend to a relentless rollercoaster of pain and fear. This movie is one of the real deals of the genre, forget your Saws and your Hostels, this is a movie that manages to make gore scary.

God bless you, Frenchies - just don't expect me to let you babysit for me, ok?

One of the best films in its genre. Real bloody horror presented in a realistic atmosphere. Inside the womb, inside the house, blood everywhere and one controversial scene, at least the birth is. Or not?

Seeing so much blood was really quite an experience, I mean, it never lets up, right up from the opening scene and the taut editing plus the short runtime for the whole film makes this much more vile as it is. Not even the art design allows for any calm, with such exhaustive and ...( read more)unnerving colours and shadows. Very realistic and also, the music was one of a kind, got right in my nerves.

One of the most, if not the most, sickest and goriest horror movies I've ever seen. Lots of blood, disturbing and disgusting scenes, and a crazy psycho murderess. This is only recommended for the true hardcore horror fan, the rest should better avoid this for they own sake.

A work of sheer demonic brilliance! Alexandre Bustillo who made a wonderful debut on this shocking and thrilling psychological horror thriller is one of the bloodiest movies ever and most unique.

This is the kind of film that pisses me off. It is well directed, scored and photographed with decent performances to boot but at its core it is nothing more than a very, very bad slasher film. All that talent was wasted on a demo reel of special effects created with the intent o...( read more)f securing future contracts.

Dumb characters are a staple of bad slasher films (and even some good ones), but "Inside" takes the cake. Our slasher is just a regular human being, and a relatively frail one at that, who is consistently outnumbered, outmuscled and outgunned. The bulk of the movie is, in essence, a long running joke about how these statues we are meant to treat as characters via suspension of disbelief will manage to fuck up a seemingly unfuckupable situation that is completely under control and get themselves killed for our enjoyment. The last 20 minutes of the film are particularly egregious, and reveal the fact that the filmmakers have a lot more in common with Eli Roth than it is wise to.

What are we left with, then, if we simply take the film for what it is? It isn't frightening, because not only have we seen about 30 home-invasion films in the past 2 years but this one leaves little to the imagination. It isn't affecting, because not for a second do we buy these stand-ins as characters and thus feel nothing but contempt for them. It isn't entertaining, because the film's formula of visitors getting the drop on our slasher only to be dropped in turn by behaving as no human being has, in all likelihood, ever behaved gets very old very fast. The film's graphic and realistic bloodletting may provoke the occasional reflexive wince at first, but the film is so determined to SHOCK us and overload our delicate sensibilities with such a barrage of violence that it isn't very long before the film has, unwittingly, reached the dreaded level of self parody.

When the best thing you can say about a film is that it tried to make you wince, you know you've wasted 2 hours. "Inside", however, doesn't even manage to satisfy its puerile aim because it labors under the impression that violence and gore in and of themselves are enough to generate an emotional response when it could not possibly be more mistaken. An audience isn't involved in what happens, but in who it happens to. If we have no reason whatsoever to care about what occurring then suspension of disbelief is broken, and we remain well aware that we are watching buckets of corn syrup and latex being wasted in what is little more than a lazy, cynical attempt to maintain our attention.

Must-see horror. Best to go into this knowing nothing. A new classic, with some of the most gripping gore to splatter the screen in decades. This is one of those movies where I feel the only substantial thing I have to say is, "Why haven't you seen this yet?"

After a second ...( read more)screening, I've noticed some cool details: the address of the house is 666, the film uses fade wipes not to indicate passage of much time but to indicate a shift in perspective (except for once towards the very end), the first time the killer is in the house her shadow appears pregnant. As I recall from the first screening, the house feels incredibly womb-like and I still can't exactly decipher how the director does this other than pure pacing, tension, some of the soundtrack, and the story itself. The sound is brilliant and is responsible for making the kills seem so immediate and vicious. The whole final scene, but especially that final creepy shot is excruciatingly horrifying to the extent that it almost makes me want to quit the horror genre. Few films have delivered such genuine and unforgettable scares. I was left genuinely frightened and creeped out at the conclusion, feeling that same residual horror that The Exorcist leaves stained upon your brain. I'm ratcheting this up to five stars.
"So Fucked Up" highlight: supposedly dead and eyeless policeman rises and fights back

I gave it as high a rating as I did purely because there was lots of blood and graphic violence, which I like. But, the story etc was lame as hell. But I don't really think anyone would watch this for the story.

The ending was the worst part of it, especially the "zombie" cop,...( read more) which just made me laugh a lot and rate the movie down. But I was happy to find it showed a lot of the violence, it didn't just show what was about to happen and then cut away to show you the shadows or something.

It is rare that I am shocked by a film. Truly rare. I've seen my share of horror films and understand what a "fucked up" movie should look like. And I mean genuinely fucked up, not in the way many people would claim the Saw films as "dude, that was totally sick." This film is fuc...( read more)ked up. And anyone stupid enough to take that a positive reviews needs to watch it as punishment. I can handle a lot of violence. However, there needs to be a point to the violence. Either have it lend to the plot or be for humor. However, in this case, is it for no reason beyond shock and after a while you are still grossed out, but only partially by the blood. Primarily you find it sick that someone would find it necessary. So shame on the directors. Gore is an art and they just shat on the work of Herschell Gordon Lewis. I was impressed with the creepy Danish horror vibe at the beginning but it didn't last long.

  • November 23, 2008
This is absolutely the most horrifying movie I've seen since The Descent. I'm sure it met its goal in that regard, but I don't know if that justifies a high rating - you could effortlessly tag this as hateful, violent, exploitative, unnecessary, misogynistic, and straight up tast...( read more)eless. But the funny thing about Inside is that it got me to wondering if labeling a movie with such terms is a defense mechanism, a barrier to keep things that make us uncomfortable at a safe distance. What is a horror movie, but an externalization of things that we fear? These premises and the accompanying images come from human brains, and surely the one that developed this terrifying gem doesn't condone what happens here.

If you strip it of ideology or agenda, this is a towering horror movie, a resounding victory for France's otherwise flimsy horror output, and an instant classic in its pantheon. Its somewhat noticeable flaws are erased by the mounting sense of hysteria, ceaseless brutal gore, indelible imagery, and the two crackling lead performances. Beatrice Dalle's work here should be career-changing; it is rare that a woman of 40 is allowed a chance to prove herself like this, and she steps up to the plate with a performance of few words and many, many facets. What could have been a psychopathic caricature becomes something enigmatic and terrifying, almost like a character out of a warped fable.

People have learned to run to "over the top" as a justification for a horror film's failure, which I think is perfectly fair. Inside could very well be stuck with such a stigma. But all it takes is one little thing to pull you into this nightmare and once that happens it will not let you go. That's what Alysson Paradis is left to do - she is skeletal and haunted, defeated before the terror even begins, and the thought of this suffering woman suffering even more readies the audience for the impending beatdown. If you have even an ounce of sympathy for characters in movies, Inside will get you. If not, you may still enjoy the horrific gory deaths. Absolutely recommended viewing, anyway, if you can stomach it.

A really simple and unique story line gone completely wrong. This could have been a great movie if it didnt feel like the directors/producers were rushing to finish this movie, as if they didnt respect the project enough to take the time and make a quality movie. So many times I ...( read more)was scratching my head saying "Why?" **Spoiler** Why the hell would the killer find anything sexy about the person she is about to kill... she all of sudden gets lesbian tendencies before trying to take her baby!??!!?!!? Just one of the scenes that tells me the directors are throwing in any sort of cliche possible to entertain a short attention-spanned audience.

The thing people are raving about is the blood and effects. Ok, I'll admit the movie has a couple good moments of great imagery. The baby inside the womb is pretty much the graphic I'll praise the most. But then you have a close up of the main character's slashed face as she looks into the mirror. This is where you say, "HEY, look what we can do with effects, this is our mona lisa... get a good look!" And I honestly I think I saw better make up this past halloween from the local kids! Its like the same level as Hostel... just poorly done. Lastly, just to throw it in somewhere... The characters have a very difficult time seeing anything when the lights go out, then the main character LITERALLY finds a needle in a haystack when she picks up a sewing needle in the darkness.... aaaarrgh.

Well, I've just finished watching this unadulterated piece of crap and feel that's another hour and a quarter of my life which I will never get back. If it hadn't been for the first 30 minutes boring me too rigid to even move, I would certainly not have watched the rest of this f...( read more)ilm at all.
Not only was it YET ANOTHER HOME INVASION film but it was a poorly done one at that.
If the CGI foetus that kept appearing wasn't enough to put anybody off, the sheer incompetence of the dumbest French flics to ever appear on screen should do... although you have to give them credit for managing to turn up at Vanessa Paradis' sister's house without her even giving them her address on the phone.
Pretty much all credibility and empathy was lost soon after the horrendous "Ghost" moment. Yeah, it just needed Patrick Swayze and a potter's wheel to complete the awfulness of it all.
But it is gory... very, very gory. I wouldn't say that it's the bloodiest film I've ever seen but "gorehounds" will undoubtedly get a kick out of it even if it is all over the top and ludicrous.
It's not scary unless you are pregnant and hormonal, doesn't have much tension or suspense and is really quite inferior to "Ils" which got released in the US last year.
I'm giving it 1 out of 10 just because it was nice to see Betty Blue's Beatrice Dalle in something again. It's just a pity that it didn't live up to the hype that other online reviewers have fallen for. Without Beatrice Dalle it wouldn't have got any points at all.

A few years back, when the words 'Japanese' and 'Horror' were said in the same sentence, ears would rise and interest would immediately peak. Now, replace 'Japanese' with 'French' and the reaction will still be the same. A l'interieur (aka Inside) co-directed by first timers Alex...( read more)andre Bustillo and Julien Maury. It is hard to believe that these two men could create a debut that is this good, this intense, this...ferociously insane bloodbath. Think of Alexandre Aja's 2003 horror 'Haute Tension' (which was also a brutal but excellent slasher) mixed with Halloween and toss in Dario Argento's style (particularly from 'Tenebrae') and you have Inside.

Bustillo does not bother with a story that is in-depth or very large for that matter. In fact, it is rather simple: Sarah (Alysson Paradis) is a young photographer who recently lost her boyfriend in a car crash and she is still grieving over her loss. It is now Christmas and she is alone and expecting a baby the next day. On Christmas Eve she is visited by a Woman in Black (Béatrice Dalle) who wants to get inside the house for reasons unknown. However, soon enough, she is in the house and her goal becomes crystal clear. She is after Sarah's baby and she will do anything to get it...absolutely anything.

There are many techniques that make this film as good as it is. First and foremost, the setting. The majority of the film is set in Sarah's house, furthermore, most of this is in her bathroom. This makes for some extremely intense moments and real feelings of claustrophobia. Also, the two leading ladies give such powerful performances which really assists in getting us to feel what they feel and think what they think. Sarah's determination to survive and fight back is realistic and gives the movie a powerful vibe and theme of a mother's love for her unborn child. La femme (the Woman in Black) is comparable to The Shape (Michael Myers) from John Carpenter's 1978 slasher classic 'Halloween.' For the first 20 minutes she appears as a silhouette, not speaking, just standing and watching. Creepy and chilling are just two words which describe her in the first part of the movie.

Now onto the parts of the movie discussed the most...the copious amounts of blood. And let me tell you, once the blood starts to flow it never stops. From the moment we see our first drop the movie moves at such a breakneck pace it is hard to keep up. I was literally on the edge of my seat while watching these parts, that is how intense they were. Not only that, but the gore was so realistic and brutal at times I found myself covering my eyes (which I rarely do in any film). Blood sprays, crotches are stabbed, throats are slashed, faces are burnt and heads explode. The finale is soaked in blood and features one of the most depressing, disturbing and gruesome endings I have seen. No one will be able to leave the movie feeling well...I felt emotionally drained and ill. Movies rarely do that to me.

Ignoring some lapses in logic and a fairly bland revelation (not really a twist), Bustillo and Maury have created a refreshingly brilliant horror movie that proves that: horror is not dead and that the French are now producing the best horror movies seen in many years.

    *Sigh*
This is the sound I had to verbally make after watching this as I think I probably didnt breathe much. This was a completely inspired movie with apparently very well known French actors taking a risk being directed by new-to-the-industry directors.
Everyone seems to be ha...( read more)ppy they took that risk.
I haven't had a rollercoaster ride like this in a looong time, and this would have been perfect if not for some horrible survival choices made by the characters in the movie (yea, we always say "we'd do it different by...", but you never know); and some actual OVER usage of blood.
I loved Beatrice Dalle's kooky insanity how seductive she could look one moment and then have those busted teeth the next.
In the end, perhaps its a bit of a buzzkill. I'm all for nonhappy endings, the original ending for Descent was perfect; but this one kind of just made you want to go back in time and somehow make things right for all involved.

Definately not for the squeemish or "gore-a-phobic". Not entirely without merrit, but a mostly disappointing film.

There is a interesting premise at the heart of the story, but it is repeatidly over shadowed by ridiculous side stories and plot holes galore. Not to mention an...( read more) over abundance of gratuitous violence and gore which (if your into that) was remarkably realistic, but (for the most part) serves no purpose other then to gross you out.

The two female leads (Paradis & Dalle) are REALLY good, drawing their strength from the heart of the story and not the typhoon of nonsense that is taking place around them.

While I enjoy a good gross-out film as much as the next guy...gore and violence alone, does not a good movie make. In my opinion, the most powerful films are the ones with a thought provoking story that allows your mind to create fear and build tension. This film relies almost entirely on visual aids and shock value.

"My child, my baby. Finally inside me. Nobody is gonna take him from me. Nobody can hurt him now. Nobody."

I don't think I can named a modern horror film that's come so close to classic Giallo as Inside does, and I don't think you'll really want to if you didn't li...( read more)ke it. Frankly, it's one of the most vicious and cringe inducing horror thrillers made in years. It's a compelling, unusually nasty little horror flick that takes an exceedingly simple premise - a pregnant lady terrorized by a psychopath - and just runs with it. Not since Rosemary's Baby has there been a film to freak out pregnant women this much. I think my water broke three times during the film.

    Photobucket

You know how Japanese horror took the film festivals, the arthouses, and the Hollywood remake machine by storm a few years ago? This new wave of freaky French fright flicks is starting to make me feel exactly like I did when I first started to discover those films: really excited. From Them and High Tension to new arrivals like Frontière(s) and now Inside, I'm starting to think the French take their horror fare very seriously. And I know it's all very popular nowadays to dislike them, but if they keep offering imports like this one, I can't see how they won't eventually start to be taken seriously.

The plot is a wonderfully stripped-down affair: Sarah (Alysson Paradis) is an extremely pregnant young woman who recently lost her husband in a terrible car accident. She's scheduled to have her baby the next day, so her plan is to spend Christmas Eve alone at home - as the miserable girl that she is - and then check into the hospital in the morning to give birth. Sounds simple enough. Unfortunately there's this outrageously crazy psycho bitch (Béatrice Dalle) who's entirely convinced that our heroine's unborn baby... is hers. And let's just say our villainess is not averse to getting her hands dirty while extracting the unborn child. That's pretty much it: two women, one night, several unlucky bystanders, and more fake blood than Herschell Gordon Lewis ever dreamt of.

Some may call it sick and others may call it shamelessly ugly garbage, but as someone who's seen hundreds of horror films from every corner of the globe - I'm convinced that Inside is some sort of maniacal mini-masterpiece. Or if it is just 83 minutes of well-polished genre crap, then it's crap that had me cringing, cheering, clapping, howling and gaping slack-jawed at the screen. It's an audaciously gruesome little flick, there's no doubt about that, and I guarantee it'll cause some controversy once the mainstream catches a sniff. And naturally it'll be interesting to see how female audiences will react to it.

This stylish, sticky and jaw-droppingly graphic dark fairy tale comes from first-timers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, and it sure seems like the duo wanted their debut effort to make an impression. As in: you simply won't believe how far over-the-top Inside gets. It's powerfully gory, admirably unsettling, bleakly amusing, and at its best moments, the film is deliciously suspenseful. But what makes such a simplistic story work so well? My theory is this: when you think about it, there's nothing more valuable than a very pregnant woman. And to see one in danger (let alone danger of THIS dizzying degree) allows a viewer to become instantly invested in her painful situation.

After a while, the flesh everywhere on the screen seems positively eager to part and open the floodgates. The film becomes nasty, then disgusting, then disgustingly nasty. The two actresses keep this private war rooted in the fury only women can have for each other - this is as far from a sisterhood chick flick as a film can get without throwing porn into the mix. Occasionally an outsider stumbles into the fray, only to be discouraged in some very wet fashion. Towards the end, even the most audacious viewer may groan and wonder if the film will go there. Not only does it go there, it snaps full-colour photos and shoves them under your nose. For all that, the most disturbing thing in Inside is the sight of Béatrice Dalle attempting to act normal. There are hidden reserves of sadness in her rampaging-psycho performance, too - volumes are conveyed by the way she rejects a meant-to-be-consoling male hand on her knee. Kindness is not hers to give or receive, not any more.

I'm repeating myself, I know, but this is really one hardcore horror film. If your 50-year-old mother was proud of herself after sitting through Saw 2, make sure she realizes that she's never even dreamt of a film as graphically distressing as Inside. I don't mind admitting that I left the theatre more than a little shaken, but like I said: I've seen too many horror films to count, and if this one left me with a few butterflies in the belly, you should take the admission for what it's worth: Inside is unrelenting, brutal and stunningly violent. It's also well-crafted, powerful, creepy and scary on a murky primal level. All I can say is I'm glad I was born a guy. Women have it so much tougher than we do.
