Dennis Harvey, Variety
An amiable, if flyweight, diversion.
-
Lisa Alspector, Chicago Reader
More schmaltzy than funny.
-
, Time Out
Shun this witless showcase for the Saturday Night Live double act of Ferrell and Kattan.
-
Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
A Night at the Roxbury probably never had a shot at being funny anyway, but I don't think it planned to be pathetic. It's the first comedy I've attended where you feel that to laugh would be cruel to the characters.
-
Joe Baltake, Sacramento Bee
Not the rock-bottom worst of the SNL skit-derived films, but pretty darn close...
-
Paul Tatara, CNN.com
Basically a longer version of its poster.
-
Sandra Contreras, TV Guide's Movie Guide
It would take far better writing than Kattan, Ferrell and Steve Koren can muster to make it less than an ordeal.
-
Stefan Birgir Stefansson, sbs.is
based on this, i did not expect ferrell to make it big
-
Sandie Angulo Chen, Common Sense Media
Not worth seeing unless you're a huge Ferrell fan.
-
Jason Zingale, Bullz-Eye.com
Not exactly highbrow stuff, but who ever said a comedy needed to be highbrow to enjoy?
-
Guy MacPherson, Apollo Guide
There's a modest collection of extras for a 'special edition' DVD.
-
Pablo Villaca, Cinema em Cena
Depois de um tempo, parei de prestar atenção na história (hein?) e me concentrei na boa trilha sonora. Além disso, o filme é curto o bastante para não se tornar intolerável.
-
Rich Cline, Shadows on the Wall
relentlessly silly
-
Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com
One thin joke stretched over 80-some tiring minutes.
-
Eric Lurio, Greenwich Village Gazette
Crap!!!!!

A Night at the Roxbury is a rather annoying and highly forgettable comedy. That being said, over the years I have accrued more appreciation for the film. I'm not saying that I like it, but I can find a lot more humor in it than I once could. I like the whole idea of it, what with the clubbing, loser brothers, but the execution is just off, as it is often with ridiculous comedies like this.
Two brothers Doug and Steve still live with their parents. Their father owns a floral shop and wants them to work hard for the family business. Instead, the two spend their time hitting on every woman they see and going clubbing at night. Sounds like fun, but the problem is that they fail at both. They can't get in the clubs and when they do, they are lousy with the women. They lust after one night in the hottest club in town, The Roxbury.
Will Farrell and Chris Kattan definitely have good chemistry. The problem is with how their characters are played. Farrell is basically just taken like a slow teenager the whole time, while Kattan looks out the corner of his eyes and scoffs at things. If you can buy into their ridiculous performances, there is fun to be had; it's just not any easy thing to do. I like the supporting cast though.
While A Night at the Roxbury isn't what I'd call a great movie, it has got a place in the world of movies. It's one of those movies that, if you can stand, you watch late at night every once in awhile when you don't want to think about anything. A short runtime and quick paced storyline keeps things moving and makes the movie much more watchable. It will never be considered anything more than a dumb, bad comedy, but still you may want to give it a chance on the off case, you actually could like the humor involved.

A Night at the Roxbury is one of the first Will Ferrell films that I first saw, and I thought it was a pretty decent comedy. The film is fun to watch, and is the only watchable Chris Kattan film. The film is quite simple in its execution. The film provides you with mild laughter, and it works. Although this isn't a memorable comedy, it is lots of fun. As far as a film based on a skit from SNL is concerned, this is one of the better films. Though not perfect, it is a funny flick and is one of those films that should be watched with friends. For what it is, it's a mindless comedy with decent laughs. I enjoyed the ridiculousness of this film, and thought that the leads were pretty good. This was Will Ferrell in his heyday. This is the type of film that he made that actually was funny. Nowadays, Ferrell is hit or miss. But this was made back when he was funny and his career was just warming up. A decent laugh fest that is harmless fun, A Night at the Roxbury makes you laugh, and is quite underrated. Compared to later SNL films, this is among the few that are funny. However, this isn't the greatest of SNL films that honor belongs to Wayne's World 1 and 2. If you're a Will Ferrell fan, check this out. This is one of his earliest best comedies, even if it's nothing great, it's a decent comedy to watch and a mindless good time. A Night at the Roxbury is decent for what it is, and is better than what most people think. Give it a shot, you may enjoy it.

This movie is hilarious! Kattan and Ferrell make a brilliant team. Even though they look nothing like brothers, their relationship is believable, and very funny. All the actors in this are hilarious even in the smaller roles. It was hard to imagine that such a small SNL skit could be made into a movie, but it really works, and surprises you. I highly recommend this movie.

I'm not gonna say it was bad.....but it sure as hell wasn't good

Silly, stupid, and not very much fun (or funny). I didn't much care for this when I first saw it, and my feelings haven't gotten better since then.

I really just don't know what to say about this movie? I is soo stupidly funny that I actually found myself annoyed at some points, but it does deliver the laughs. I want to like this so much more, but I can't.

An early film for both Ferrell and Katan but it still shows some really good chemistry and some really high laughs, its a shame they havent made more together. Its hugely dated now but so good to see, the music, club style and look and the brilliant wardrobe on display haha there are some really golden moments in this but one wonders how much better it may have been if Carey was in it like the original SNL sketch.

Chris Kattan had most of the prominence in this movie more than Will Ferrell, but look who had the better career. Good "nothing-to-it" movie.

Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan are hilarious as the two club scene brothers that are so dorky. I think this is so funny to watch.

Do not get me wrong this is not a big screen life changing film but it is certainly a movie that will make you laugh out loud. I loved these cahracters; Steve and Doug from SNL.....good memories from when I was in high school...the music will bring back both good and crazy memories for many.

Outside of Ferrell and Kattan, this movie blows.

one of the funnier movies out there

The skit worked because that Haddaway song "What is Love" was so dang catchy and because we could all look at how self-deprecatingly stupid people look, dancing to stupid, catchy songs... and how inept guys look when using stupid come-on lines. It was satire in some sense. Satire is generally funny but a smart funny. Smar this movie is not.
Long story short: more money for any good comedians whoring themselves out to less-than-credible roles.

Doug Butabi: So anyways, I was standing there waiting to use the pay phone.
Steve Butabi: Yeah, he was, seriously.
Doug Butabi: And this guy who was on the phone, turns around and tips his hat like this.

Steve Butabi: The Mighty Duck man, I swear to God, I was there.
Doug Butabi: Of course you were, you were the one who yelled the Breakfast Clubber's name.
Steve Butabi: I was like, "Emilio."
Somehow, this is one of the few SNL skit movies that works. It is delightfully ridiculous, with a very tiny plot, and plenty of random moments. Ferrell and Kattan do well together, bouncing off each others stupidity within their characters. And the whole thing even ends with an over-the-top happy ending to enjoy.l
Mr. Zadir: Dooey, did you just grab my ass?
Dooey: Sir, from where I'm standing, that's a physical impossibility.
Mr. Zadir: Oh, I know your tricks, Dooey!

its like watching a hour an a half sketch of SNL, Ferrell and Kattan are funny

It was funny enough, yet way too dumb to care.

Don't you know folks at work in or in your school who never seem to be "in" the mainstream? Kattan ranks as one of the most bizarre SNL grads to move on to movies. Anyone who could pull off the Mango character with so much consistency is sitting on some kind of a talent pool. I think this movie is better than the critics say. These . . . brothers . . . are an appealingly strange duo for me. More human than the "wild and crazy guys." Ferrell's 15 minutes are running out on a fast clock. He might do well to think about what he's doing that makes this performance special. Then, Will, you carry that over into other roles you play. It's that easy. I really feel for these slightly skewed characters. Might even be empathy . . .
-
A disappointing film that only suceeds in supplying a few tasteless, immature jokes.
-
More of a series of sketches than an actual movie, A Night at the Roxbury has enough funny moments (propelled almost solely by Kattan and Ferrell) to hold it together, at least somewhat.
