Clint Eastwood, hot off of his Academy Award win for Unforgiven, directed this small character study, appearing in the guise of a cops-and-robbers action picture. The film takes place during the fall of 1963. Eight-year old Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther), the son of a devout Jehovah's Witness mother, is staying home while all the other children are out trick-or-treating. Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"In going beyond chase-yarn duty, Eastwood and Costner do themselves proud."
‑ Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"Within its narrow, unambitious, commercial boundaries, the movie is highly watchable."
‑ Desson Thomson, Washington Post
"Tells the tale of an escaped convict and his eight-year-old hostage and, in the process, considers the cycles of disappointment wrought on sons by questionable fathers: abusive ones, absent ones, even a well-meaning "daddy state." [Blu-ray]"
‑ Peter Canavese, Groucho Reviews
"Right on the heels of his critical and box-office smash Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood made this outstanding, haunting tale of an escaped convict (Kevin Costner in his greatest performance), and it was completely ignored."
‑ Jeffrey M. Anderson, Combustible Celluloid
"Never once feels like more than push-button artifice."
‑ Scott Weinberg, Apollo Guide
"A Perfect World is evidence that Hollywood is still capable of producing the kinds of moving, intelligent movies that have increasingly become the province of independent film makers."
‑ James Berardinelli, ReelViews
"It's an American masterpiece."
‑ Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central
"Entertaining manhunt film."
‑ Dennis Schwartz, Ozus' World Movie Reviews
"Stark, gritty story well directred by Eastwood."
‑ Steve Crum, Kansas City Kansan
"Some may accuse the picture of sentimentality, but really it gets caught up in the moment."
‑ Bill Chambers, Film Freak Central
"This is a movie that surprises you."
‑ Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"It will not please everyone because it presents things in shades of gray and takes few easy outs."
‑ John J. Puccio, Movie Metropolis
"A tender, poignant, ultimately heartbreaking film filled with haunting, lasting images and nicely eccentric touches. Arguably Costner's best performance, and one of Eastwood's most underrated efforts behind the camera."
‑ Chuck O'Leary, FulvueDrive-in.com
"Moving and totally absorbing."
‑ Michael Dequina, TheMovieReport.com
"A Perfect World is essentially an indictment of how the American penal system turns troubled boys into career crooks, but the film is weakened by a plethora of inappropriate comedy."
‑ Chris Hicks, Deseret News, Salt Lake City
