In my opinion this is one of Clint's best films and dare I say even better than his previous endeavour Unforgiven. With one of my favourite actors Kevin Costner at the helm of this gripping man-hunt across the U.S and in particular Texas this movie is a fantastic movie to watch and connect with.
Costner has one of his best performances ever as an escaped con on the run with an 8 year old boy as a hostage, and Costner becomes the "father-figure" the boy never had. This movie is really touching and Clint's clever and I want to say effective use of violence helps us empathize with Costner's character and his opinions and attitude towards child abuse.
And finally, as to be expected is Clint's amazing eye for scenery, really capturing the rural South of the US of A and mixed with great acting provides us with both great comic relief and heart-wrenching emotion. On all levels this movie is a masterpiece of two mens journey, one mans just ending, and ones just beginning make this a great film.
criminally overlooked, and the film that brought an end to costners box office gold in the early 90s.
clint eastwood, directs and co stars, as a texas ranger, in 60s texas, who has to hunt down fujitive kevin costner fresh out of jail, and on route kidnapps a young boy played by t.j lowther. as they go threough texas, tipically a bond developes, and the kid learns a new lease of life as him being a jehova religion, he gets to do all the stuff his parents wouldent normally allow, but with eastwood, on his tail, he knows time is short. love this film, and a great role for costner, he was in the top of his game from late 80s to early 90s, and this deserves to be seen more, eastwood as ever, showing a great nack for acting, directing, a nice leisurly paced film, which does take its time, but all the better for it, agreat road movie up there with sugerland express, which has many similerities, great looking texas landscape as well, a great chase movie
Clint Eastwood?s follow up to Unforgiven continues with the more enlightened take on violence seen in his later directorial works. The film takes place in Texas during the early 60s and depicts a manhunt for an escaped convict who has taken a child hostage. The convict, played by Kevin Costner, is not the cruel killer the police think he is and an odd Stockholm-ish friendship forms between the convict and his young hostage. The film is very well directed and Costner gives what may be the best performance of his career, I usually hate him but he really impressed me here. Eastwood is also good playing a smaller role than usual, unfortunately a lot of the supporting and bit performers are fairly weak and there are some poor bits of Hollywood stupidity. The overall story is good and the direction is great, chalk this up as a flawed but still very strong work.
This is one of my favortie movies, i was 7 or 8 when i first watched it, and i've seen it more than 5 times ever since, Clint Eastwood can make a picture that is so perfect
A materpiece. Director, Clint Eastwood crafts a beautifully told and heart-breaking drama. Stunning, bold, riveting and breathtaking. One of Easdtwood's finest films and one of Costnert's finest roles. Kevin Costner gives a gripping and exceptional performance. Clint Eastwood is subtel and teriffic. A film of rare calibur and emotional depth. A film you will not be able to turn away from. It's enjoyable and unforgettable. It's all heart.
Oh I loved this movie. Criminals with hearts, what more could you ask for? Though it usually makes for sad endings as you would like to see it go a different way.
You can always count on Clint Eastwood movies to be of a certain quality. This is an interesting chase of a good hearted fugative and his unlikely protoge. If you don't mind watching films that has the guts to stray from the Hollywood money making machine ideal you should watch this.
i liked this one when i came out and it holds up well. it's a great reltionship formed between Butch and "Buzz". you care for these characters and you feel like it's 1963.
I loved this movie. It is funny at a lot of parts. I have seen it on TV a lot. I am even buying it sometime real soon. My dad was watching it one night so i started to watch it and turned out to LOVE it.
"This is a 20th century time machine Philip. Back there is the past, up there is the future and right here is the present. Enjoy it while it lasts." Pure Brilliant.
i was a kid when i saw this movie and i remeber tear streaming down my face with out even knowing i was crying. this movie has all the heart and soul anyone could ask for. u can find crime, cold heartedness, innocence, friendship and all the inbetweens in this movie.
This movie is moving from beginning all the way through to the end. Costner is great in this one, and I don't know who the kid is, but he was a pro in this movie.
Being as he is totally without humour, it should be strange that the combination of Kevin Costner and pre-teen children works as well as it does. Here he is on the run, and bonding, with a single boy; the year after he was in the whimsical The War with a whole litter of kids. A year after that came Waterworld, and Costner was gradually softened by a little girl this time. I think the combination works because of Costner's implacable earnestness: he does not ever - he cannot ever - have any agenda other than that which is immediately apparent to the audience. He is completely above suspicion, and this allows for some extraordinary scenes in A Perfect World. What would be risky and even distasteful done by any other actor (perhaps excluding Eastwood himself) is here endearing and heartwarming. The film itself is thoroughly American - relying as it does on firearms and automobiles - and shot through with the dry, dark humour we have come to expect from Eastwood. As a filmmaker he has an uncanny ability to make unpredictable pictures with exactly the right balance between the familiar and the original. Due credit ought to go to the writer too, John Lee Hancock. Costner's relationship with the boy cannot have been an easy one to develop or maintain from a writing point of view, but it works and feels natural throughout.
