    In terms of cinematography I think this is Ozu's most beautiful B&W film. The story follows a theater troupe headed by the reoccurring character Kihachi who also appears in An Inn in Tokyo played by the same actor.

    ive always believed that striking images and effective facial expressions from actors was far more important in silent films than the story, but ozu brings us this silent classic where he uses effective performers, creates some of the most beutiful images ive ever seen in any fil...( read more)m silent or not, and tells a near perfect story to bring the best of all worlds together so that we get one of the best silent pictures ever made. nearly as good as ozu's remake 25 years later, this story is authentic but passionate and convicting. easily one of the darkest films of ozu's career, the film is also beautiful to consider despite the folly and depravity of some of its characters. a must see.

    Very interesting Ozu film, though it is very simple, but it is very effective in showing how a father can be very callous and yet loving. Though the subject matter may be a tad bit petty, it is the emotions that it brings out with such sublime clarity, where information is delive...( read more)red, in my opinion, smoothly. The part where he loses his wallet and it is precious to him grabbed me. Also, the rain pouring in, a very strong metaphor too. The use of simple literary tools to create a simple but charming film held me.
