-
Lisa Alspector, Chicago Reader
This realist fairy tale of impossible love has a fair amount of nuance and charm.
-
Christy Lemire, Associated Press
It's an overwrought teen weepy, Terms of Endearment for the TRL crowd.
-
, Time Out
An adolescent romance we've seen a million times before.
-
Robert K. Elder, Chicago Tribune
It's sad that Moore's first major cinematic outing scrapes the bottom of the melodramatic barrel.
-
Rex Reed, New York Observer
So boring that even its target audience talked all the way through it.
-
Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
Just because A Walk to Remember is shrewd enough to activate girlish tear ducts doesn't mean it's good enough for our girls.
-
Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy
Adopts a breezy anti-cynicism as a pose, and then spends the rest of the time failing in the most spectacular way to competently execute it.
-
Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
Too-syrupy re-tread of Love Story.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
This is a great romantic tearjerker.
-
Mark Halverson, Sacramento News & Review
A shameless, compassionate tearjerker about hope, inspiration and courage.
-
, Empire Magazine
For anyone under 13, free from cynicism and with a need to believe that 17 year-old boys aren't just after one thing, maybe this film rocks.
-
John Venable, Supercala.com
Succeeds modestly as a teen movie. Expect anything else from it and you'll be disappointed.
-
Michael Dequina, Film Threat
A monstrosity of a movie that I am all too eager to forget.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
Those raised on idealized romances (the Ken and Barbie kind) where love conquers all will no doubt love this sappy tale.
-
Kimberley Jones, Austin Chronicle
[A] wretched teen dramedy.
-
John R. McEwen, Film Quips Online
A kind of low-rent version of Love Story with overt religious overtones...
-
Harry Guerin, RTE Interactive (Dublin, Ireland)
'No one was expecting Remains of the Day but this film could have been more than just a Dawson's Creek stop gap.'
-
Nick Davis, Nick's Flick Picks
Wholly un-groundbreaking, deeply conservative, increasingly sentimental, but reflecting some of the best of those qualities.
-
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK]
This horrific teen romance-cum-weepie is best watched from between your fingers, or from under your seat, or perhaps standing outside the cinema looking in the opposite direction.
-
, FilmFour.com
Director Shankman ditches character development in favour of delivering an exploitative date movie and dubiously conservative moral lesson.

If you are a romantic, this is the movie for you. But it is difficult to watch without an odd tear welling in your eyes.

I truly cared to see A Walk to Remember, until I absolutely had to, or forced to. I had read many things on this film, some good, and some bad. Mostly bad. The film was surprisingly decent, nothing great or anything good. But decent. I felt that it was an interesting enough film to watch. Nothing more. The film didn't have awful acting, as I'd expect it to have and I liked that the guy who was basically an asshole because he was one of the "popular cool kids" decided to change because he met a girl that was kinder than most of his friends. There is an average story going on here, but as a person who normally doesn't like romance films, I thought that A Walk to Remember was very decent. There are things that could've been done better, but this isn't too bad of a film. I didn't think the ending was all that sad either. I know that sounds cold, but I just didn't feel anything. How ever I do admire some of the issues displayed in this film, and it did have a heart. I thought it was a decent film for what it was. Though it has plenty of flaws, A Walk to Remember is an entertaining film that wasn't all bad. Sure it touches on the clichéd love story aspects, and it's meant as a teen romance film. But they could've done slightly better. One of the reasons this isn't utter trash is because of Mandy Moore's fairly good performance here. Overall a decent little film, but nothing truly memorable or great on screen.

One of the most heartbreaking films I've ever watched. Mandy Moore and Shane West make a great couple and the ending was poignant and perfect.

"Love Story" for a new generation and so, for that reason, predictable, only this one is resonant with Christian values. But not everyone has seen "Love Story". Fresh young eyes can see this and cry.
-
One eye roll after another. I don't know I made it through the entire movie, but there are no redeeming qualities to this one. None.

Eh....it's okay. The kids seemed way too young to be THAT in love with each other. It wasn't convincing. They were what? 15? 16 years old? I'm not buying it. "She makes me want to be a better person!" haha

The script was pretty cheesy also. Like "Our love is like the wind" and "Promise you won't fall in love with me." Telling someone not to fall in love with you sounds so awkward.
It wasn't the worst chick flick I've ever seen, but this movie reminded me why I rarely watch romantic movies like that. It's predictable, cheesy, and a little awkward...and Mandy Moore looks like she's freakin 12 years old in this movie.
This movie is cute, but I've seen cuter more interesting stuff.

This timeless romance movie contains very simple story that move us from the bottom of our heart. The story comes from a book with the same title from Nicholas Sparks. In some ways, this movie is pretty religious too. Heart-breaking, lovely, and of course great chemistry between Landon and Jamie. Mandy Moore sings beautifully in the movie and creates wonderful soundtrack. A movie by Adam Shankman that shows that faith is a precious thing.

One of those sappy, innocent love stories that I love because it somehow makes me cry every single time I see it.

Love is a beautiful thing & in this romantic drama it can be the most important thing in a persons life. Landon & Jamie are proof of that. At the beginning of this movie Landon is in the in crowd & does whatever he can to please everyone. Whenever Landon has to be involved in the school play he never imagined that he would fall in love with Jamie. When she tells him about her cancer he stays by her side the whole time. This is a timeless romance that will touch every place in your heart. I can just watch it over & over again & I love it even more every time that I watch it :) Such a great & amazing movie :) I love it :)

IMO, this film had nothing new to offer. The story is quite familiar, but that's not exactly the problem. I watched "Remember the Titans" (okay, I'm not comparing the two, I'm merely using it as an example so as to make my point clear) just a day before I watched this. While "Remember the Titans" too had an ordinary story, it was the way it was told that made it so great for me. However, the execution here (for "A Walk to Remember") was so plain & dry that it didn't have any high or/and low feeling effect on me that it was supposed to. It didn't make me root for any of the characters & I didn't really care whether Jamie lived or died. Wish I could have ignored this one which was talked about highly by some people I know (I'm to be blamed here for not taking the lesson after having a similar experience with "P.S. I Love You" which too came highly recommended from the same people).

Jamie Sullivan is the daughter of the town's Baptist minister and not afraid of letting people know that her faith is the most important part of her life, even if it makes her the outcast and cost her some friends. Landon Carter is a boy who after a bad prank goes wrong is forced to participate in his high schools Drama's Club spring play in hopes that this would teach him some humility. This brings him contact with Jamie. Knowing he is out of place in this club and play, he asks Jamie for her help. Soon Landon finds himself intrigued and falling fast for this girl who has a passion for life he never imagined possible.
Such a sweet, beautiful, yet sad story. Mandy Moore and Shane West had great chemistry with each other that made their characters believable. The story itself is inspiring and reminds us, as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Also that you don't choose love, it chooses you. Just a great story with wonderful performances from not only the two leads but from Peter Coyote as well.

Amazing! This is one of my favourite romantic movies I've ever seen!

A decent film that is honest and sincere, it is for those who can still appreciate an innocent, wholesome love story.

I can not say that A Walk to Remember was a movie that I went out of my way to see, or even that I recall it being aired in any UK cinema. I happened to watch it on TV one Sunday morning expecting something somewhat usual and predictable.
I must admit I was more than pleasantly surprised, enough so to actually watch it more than once, and consequently feel compelled to write these comments. I find myself struggling not to watch it whenever I see it listed, such a charming movie is this! The plot seems to be initially a rather predictable foray into the traditional territory of bad boy meets good, but sadly plain girl. At some point in the movie, girl momentarily transforms from ugly duckling into swan. At this point I found myself feeling that comfort that we all feel in the knowledge that we know exactly what is going to happen in a movie. I was entirely convinced that the entire culmination of the thing is for girl to gain some peer group acceptance. The presence of a seemingly overly protective father hints at overtones that he may be some kind of parental tyrant figure from whom she may require some sort of heroic liberation.
However as Jaime reveals her secret then all becomes apparent, and a far more absorbing plot unfolds than is initially to be expected.
Performances are competent and heartfelt, Shane West gives an admirable portrayal of an angry young man on a path of reformation. Mandy Moore is strong and almost graceful in her role as Jaime and enhances the charm of this romantic interlude with several pretty vocal solos.
Daryl Hannah and Peter Coyote both fine actors add a lovely depth to the general proceedings and are certainly worth a mention for their respective roles as concerned parents.
It is impossible for me not to like this little film, because I am an insufferably romantic female and A walk to Remember has romance in a monumental dosage. There is little or no sexual content, rather emphasis is put upon the more admirable and sincere aspects of courtship little seen in the average teen movie.
Without going into territory that could be classed as spoiling, it is worth mentioning that some people may place A Walk to Remember into the tear- jerker category, and consign it to a dark dusty corner of their DVD collection which is only delved into in the most girly of moments.
For some, several scenes may be a little too saccharine- but if you don't like romance then this picture probably isn't for you anyway.
In my opinion, this category is a little too narrow to slide A Walk to Remember into. The true themes of this lovely story are in reality- faith, and redemption, which are universal aspects of humanity with which we can all identify in various amount.
The end result for me was that I felt uplifted at the end. Like eating a tub of ice cream or having a nice bubbly bath this is a movie to put on when you feel low or have had a bad day and it's sure to make you feel much better. You will fall in love for the first time all over again for a couple of hours.
You may well sit down to watch with preconceptions about what you are going to see. You men may sit down and watch it solely to win a few merit points from your girlfriend so she'll let you watch the football in peace later. As my title says though, this may be the one romantic movie you will hate yourself for loving.
You don't even have to admit to anybody that you watched it and liked it, but I encourage you to watch it all the same without prejudice.
A little charmer- comforting and sweet- sets out to do something very simple, and delivers well.

I'm not quite sure why I like a movie where every single character achieves some form of redemption. It's cookie-cutter, but earnest - a welcome departure from bad people doing bad things. And while Mandy Moore isn't the best actress, I dig her.
