Above the Rim

Duane Martin, Tupac Shakur, Leon, Marlon Wayans, Bernie Mac

This rousing basketball drama centers around Tommy "Shep" Sheppard (Leon), a former high school basketball star now haunted by the accidental death of his best friend, and Kyle Watson (Duane Martin), ...( read more  read more... )an arrogant high school player in danger of slipping into crime. Though Shep avoids commitment in his life as a security guard, his attraction to Kyle's mother (Tonya Pinkins) draws him out of his protective shell--but Kyle is more interested in mentorship from Shep's gangster brother Birdie (Tupac Shakur). Above the Rim is melodramatic but played with grit and energy by a solid cast, particularly Shakur. Writer-director Jeff Pollack keeps the story moving and gives the characters enough spin to rescue them from being clichés; the result is engaging despite its formulas. Also featuring Bernie Mac and Marlon Wayans. --Bret Fetzer

If you can get past all the negative ghetto (and racial)stereotypes endemic to film's of this sort, much like Boyz n' the Hood, this film has a story to tell and shows some heart.

I'm very big on basketball (the playing of it mostly) and this showed some great shots of it done. Especially on the final tournament. I enjoyed Leon's cool demeanor and Duane's vain wit on his own playing. Tupac played a very convincing and sly character. But, Leon was the true ...( read more)star of this film. A very nice urban and gritty film on the streets in the early 90's.
