Adoration is a movie bizarrely at odds with itself. Its attempts to be an accessible thriller/mystery don't necessarily run contrary to the surprising thematic richness that Atom Egoyan has peppered throughout the film, but the man has a tin ear for dialogue. More often than not,...( read more) characters feel like ciphers or mouthpieces; the most immediate offender is the loan officer that Scott Speedman talks to toward the beginning of the film, who serves as an incomprehensibly knowledgeable plot dump and then totally vanishes. Had all of this narrative flabbiness been excised from the tale (by simplifying the plot or removing some of the characters), Adoration would have been stronger for it. The movie is by all means watchable, and never truly bad, but its greatest crime is that it's overextended. Adoration first assumes the thesis that overanalyzation causes us to lose sight of the true issues at hand, which it illuminates quite elegantly with a chatroom scene...and then another...and then another. Though it does well in showing the dramatic scope that Simon's lie has taken, and the scenes are always engaging to watch if only to hear a new twisted viewpoint, they ultimately start to feel unnecessary to a theme we already understand. The movie is always intelligent, but it isn't economical. Again, those mouthpiece characters don't really seem to cut down on the verbosity; and whether by nature of the script or the actors themselves, no one can really seem to break through the artificiality of the humans constructed here. Arsinee Khanjian comes close, but her character has obviously received the most attention, and instead of seeming like a metaphorical viewpoint she's really just insane. Despite these problems, the film remains worth watching, if only because it constantly holds your attention - the plot at its core is enthralling and I found myself curious as to where it would go next. Adoration will always be remembered as a mismatch of two separate parts, however, a dissonant but still fascinating work.

"Adoration", the latest film by acclaimed Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan ("The Sweet Hereafter"), weaves a convoluted puzzle in attempt to deal with a myriad of themes. The way the story unfolds displays a masterful balancing act, but unfortunately the film is so void of plausibilit...( read more)y that moments of convincing revelation are few and far between.

The film concerns a teenage boy, Simon (Devon Bostick), who fabricates a story surrounding the death of his parents for French class. The teacher, Sabine (Arsinée Khanjian), assigned him a sort of translation project involving a news story about a terrorist who placed explosives in his girlfriend's carry on luggage. Not only does Simon translate this material, he also adapts it as the story of his own dead parents who died in a car crash years before.

Meanwhile, Simon's uncle and care-taker, Tom (Scott Speedman), makes a humble living as a tow truck driver. He's a rather unpleasant individual, intolerant of Middle Eastern people, and is challenged on Christmas Eve when a woman in a beaded veil pays him a visit and asks some deeply personal questions.

This is one of those films where everyone's fate is linked (think "Babel"), but I don't buy that as an acceptable excuse for the number of contrivances in the script. On top of Egoyan's self-admittedly over-wrought puzzle, he utilizes quite a few clumsily handled narrative devices that fall flat on their face. For instance: the film, several times throughout, sets it's focus on online communities. Video chat rooms debate Simon's story, an assemblage of nine or more persons all conversing at once. These debates neuter the audience's own critical thinking, and they are delivered in a way that no teenager has, or ever will, talk.

I commend Egoyan's ambition, but I feel that this effort is too unfocused, too deliberate. The film is a blur, it's themes often overshadowed by the never-ending musical score or the narrative's own blunt implausibilities. Although well-acted and nicely shot, "Adoration" is a confused heap of pretension.

a bit confusing but in the same vein of all of the director's other movies.

    I didnt like it.

I thought I would and I should have but I didnt find it stimulating and I didnt enjoy the film very much. Too disjointed, perhaps that is his style and it is supposed to make you think but I couldnt get my head around it there was just no continuity to the plot ...( read more)really as it kept jumping from one thing to another - much like my reviews I guess!

Acting wasnt bad, thats about all I can say about it, there were no stand out performances, a lot of it was fairly wooden in actuality.

Shame really as I dont know this Canadian director and I wanted to like his stuff but honesty is needed and I'm being generous with 2 stars.

Wasnt as shit as Righteous Kill though, that film is lucky I hadnt joined flixter before seeing it.

I'm not totally sure what the point of all of this was. *minor spoilers below*

    -----------

The movie is told in this semi-complicated and intentionally obscure way, presumably to keep a level of suspense and maintain interest in who the protagonists father really is. Come to fi...( read more)nd out at the end, everything is really pretty much normal. The guy everybody says is manipulative and "bad", really is bad, and the rest of the characters are all just as you'd expect an ordinary family to be -- not without faults, but ultimately ordinary.

The thing that bugged me most, however, was this unrealistic relationship between the protagonist and his friends online. Kids don't talk like that, nor do these sorts of discussions intrigue high schoolers enough to stay on some video chatroom for days on end arguing the merits of terrorism.

The religious undertones, as well, have me confused. There seemed to be a point, here, and I simply don't get it.

Anyway, the movie held my interest... but I was left feeling a little unsatisfied. While I would say it was enjoyable overall, I definitely wouldn't recommend this movie.

I wanted so much to love this film, but there are so many subplots, it distracted from the film as a whole. I must say, I though the film at times was downright boring. It tends to be a bit too talky at times. I was never convinced by the film and was left feeling empty, like the...( read more) film just wasn?t quite complete. On the plus side, the acting is terrific, and the score subtly effective.

Refreshingly open-minded story of intolerance and the insecurities it generates on the victim.

An acting powerhouse, with the young Devon Bostick being especially excellent.
