Adventures in Babysitting
Teenager Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) would rather party with her boyfriend, but when her beau breaks their date she reluctantly accepts a babysitting job. It isn't all TV and icebox-raiding when Chris' best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) calls her to announce that she's stranded at the bus station. With her youthful charges in tow (one of whom, 15-year-old Brad (Keith Coogan), has a hopeless crush on the babysitter), Chris heads into downtown Chicago to go to Brenda's rescue. Thus begins a roller coaster ride of comic mishaps, unexpected perils and hairbreadth escapes.… More

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"Chris sets off on a rescue mission, and ends up running the gauntlet of big city perils in a belaboured spinning-out of a weak storyline."
‑ , Time Out
"Easy-to-take effort that primarily benefits from a charming performance by Elisabeth Shue."
‑ Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing
"Seemed fun at the time, in '87, but dates badly. Still, kids might like it."
‑ Steve Crum,
"Surprisingly sweet and funny!"
‑ Nell Minow, Movie Mom at Yahoo! Movies
"So much fun it might make babysitting a real career choice."
‑ Luanne Brown, Chico Enterprise-Record
"A sweet-natured, adolescent variation on the big-city black comedy After Hours."
‑ Rita Kempley, Washington Post
"Like "Home Alone," "Adventures in Babysitting" is a lightweight comic adventure, but it's effective in what it sets out to do . . . and that's entertain."
‑ James Plath, Movie Metropolis
"A comedy classic unlikely to ever age"
‑ Clint Morris, Film Threat
"Fun for kids, maybe. Sheer drudgery for anyone beyond a Jr. High School reading comprehension level."
‑ Brian Mckay,
"A fluffy but extremely lovable teen fantasy that folks of a certain age will remember with great fondness."
‑ Rob Vaux, Flipside Movie Emporium
"By the end of the film, I'd had a couple of real laughs and a few interesting moments, but that was about all."
‑ Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"The light tone, classical style, and Shue as Sandra Dee stand-in are more indicative of a cinematic mindset from approximately 25 years earlier."
‑ Mark Pfeiffer, Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema
"Surprisingly sprightly, entertaining, sweet-natured comedy."
‑ Ken Hanke, Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
"Aw, c'mon, who can't like a movie that has The Mighty Thor as a major component?"
‑ Widgett Walls,
""After Hours" - lite ... and it works!"
‑ Scott Weinberg,
