African American Cinema 1
Oscar Micheaux is one of the most prolific black filmmakers of all time. He worked during the "race movie" period of American cinema in the 1920-30s and explored many explosive issues important to blacks, including prejudice, lynching and the Ku Klux Klan. "Within Our Gates" concerns a young black woman who wants to form a school for black children in the South. In order to do this, she must find a white Northern patron who will support the project.
