Filmmaker Jules Rosskam explores the issues of the transgendered community and how they interact with the gay culture and mainstream America in this documentary. Against A Trans Narrative includes performance pieces and interviews with thirty-six different people representing a broad cross section of age, race and gender as they confront a variety of topics including the role of gender in feminism, masculinity as it defines (and is defined by) the trans community, sexism and queer politics as they apply to the transgendered, relationship issues, debating the necessity of defining ones self through gender, the politics behind "passing" as another gender, and how age impacts the decision of what gender to embrace. The actors and crew who worked on the film also take part in the on-screen debate, allowing their own experiences and views to become part of the film's perspective. Against A Trans Narrative was an official selection at the 2009 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
