It's worth noting that director Sono Sion is a also a street poet and musician. There is a guerilla-art quality to this film. One gets the impression it's being made up on the spot, while your watching it, yet there isn't the slightest hint of improvisation and the film betrays a...( read more)n intricate construction. Contradictions abound. There's a mature adolescence in heady ideas about original sin and up-skirt, "peek-a-panty", photography. I can't call this a 'weird' film because it's not, even though I smiled through most of it thinking "This can't be serious." I was amazed by the entire cast's chameleon like ability to move convincingly among different levels of sanity. Everyone in the film is so earnestly bizarre. If you like Sono's work you will not be disappointed by this. If you haven't seen anything by him, why not start with a four hour movie? The music is great.

The most shocking thing about this 4-hour film isn't the run time. It is isn't the sparse, yet explicit violent and sexual imagery. And it isn't the biting commentary on Christianity. The most shocking thing about Love Exposure is the way the characters evolve. The sto...( read more)ry flows better and moves quicker than most 2-hour films out today.

Sion Sono's Love Exposure is a comedy romance that isn't afraid to go there.

With a run time of just under 4 hours, yeah that's right, this film comes down to being a love story. However, this movie is far from romantic. Sion finds a way to tell the story in a religiou

...( read more)s sexually offensive way.

There is no nudity aside from a few fake male nudity shots, but there are tons of panty shots as well as some passionate lesbian scenes. The violence is also pretty bloody when it shows up.

The film is told in chapters and the first 3 are entertaining. After this, the film slowly loses its entertainment value. The second half of the film is basically one long chapter, which makes one wonder why there were chapters in the first place. Nevertheless, it isn't necessarily the long run time that hurts this film because every thing that happens is integral to the story. It is the second half of the film where it loses the pizazz from the early going that disappoints. That's not to say that the film gets boring, but it sure as heck isn't exciting.

Takahiro Nishijima, Hikari Mitsushima, and Sakura Ando are the 3 actors to look out for, as all put on good performances. Takahiro and Hikari stand out the most, since their characters morph as the film progresses.

Take caution when viewing this picture. Put aside all values and take the 4 hour ride of love.

why not sit in the darkness of the theater for 4 hours, so long as every moment of it was enjoyed.

Épique, hautement original, décapant, hilarant et fortement émouvant, cette fresque de 4 heures ne durent définitivement pas assez longtemps tellement le rythme nous plonge avec aisance dans cet univers disjoncté. Magnifique, décidément.
