I have never enjoyed a PG-rated film like I have this one. This may be classified as a "kid's film" but I disagree. It's such a great and inspiring film. I have never been that excited in a movie since I watched Seabiscuit. Keke Palmer does a terrific job, especially for her bein... ...( read more )

It follows a formulaic plot structure, but I really liked how it explored the cultural and social divisions amongst classes in Los Angeles.

Dr. Larabee: "Where do you think big words come from?
    Akeelah: People with big brains?"

11-year old Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) has a gift for words. It's probably genetic: her dad (who was shot to death when she was a little girl) played scrabble, probably with... ...( read more )

This was good but I liked the documentary "Spellbound" a little better.

Sickly sweet, heart-warming family drama revolving around a spelling bee. Not exactly adrenaline filled, but very compelling. Palmer and Fishburne are wonderful and while a bit predictable, the story and message is very inspiring. Life lessons aside, it's worth watching if only f... ...( read more )

Akeelah and the Bee is predictable, but honest enough for you to not care. It's also an interesting study on the competition itself - as a former spelling bee brat, I can assure you that the elements you see like the overbearing Asian parents and the ceaseless studying are all pa... ...( read more )

    inspective movie:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God t... ...( read more )

This movie took me by suprise. I had crocodile tears in my eyes for about half of the movie. I suspect this was manipulatively done but isn't that what a movie is suppose to do, draw you in? At any rate this movie not only was very entertaining but had all the right messages, of ... ...( read more )

A movie about smart and value but being an unexpected heroine for a not-so-scholastically driven school/ area can also be damanding and beneficial. This is one very apporoved kids movie; they may be inspired to be better in educational matters

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. An... ...( read more )

...( read more )

this was actually pretty good. nice subject, you never see something like that anymore. keke palmer isn't that great of an actor in other movies, but in this, she was great.

With this film everything falls into place. Director Doug Atchison knows his material is Hallmark-quality fluff and directs it as such. The film looks satisfyingly polished. There's an abundance of generic preachiness; the film quotes a lot from Mandela and Dr. Larabee seems pers... ...( read more )

With its warmth and enchanting story, "Akeelah and the Bee" proves to be one of the strongest movies of 2006. Keke Palmer is graceful as Akeelah Anderson and Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne are excellent as always. The screenplay is a bit cheesy but the structure is very wel... ...( read more )
