A good attempt at adapting the novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, however, the brief visit to Through The Looking Glass is so brief, I wonder why they bothered. The idea behind this adaptation is to take the original story of a little girl lost in a dream-like fantasy world and give it a plot and theme, but while this draws the story together and creates an arc we can follow, it thwarts the point of the original, for now instead of everyone being rude to Alice, they help her.
Ignoring that, the all-star cast are excellent and well cast, particularly Martin Short as the Hatter, although it would have been better if they had standardised the accents.
It's a sweet, fun film, but a bit vapid and it feels rather sleepy, mainly because of the source material being so weird, so it never quite clicks.
I only wanted to see this because Gene Wilder and Martin short was in it. It annoyed me up until Gene Wilder's portrayal of the old Mock Turtle. He made this movie for me, he always has a twinkle in his eye that captivates me.
Is it possible for a story about talking caterpillars, a giant bunny and a girl who can grow to giant proportions to be too bizarre for its own good? It's not the surrealist edge of Lewis Carroll's original story that's the problem here so much as the overstuffed nature of this particular adaptation, which is crammed with flashy special effects and unneccessary celebrity cameos (some of which, like Whoopi Goldberg's Cheshire Cat, are nightmare-inducingly creepy). The production design is lavish and expensive-looking without really providing any lasting impact, since Alice's adventures just sort of meander randomly along to no particular purpose... it's as though the producers weren't interested in Carroll's story except as an excuse to mount a star-studded spectacle.
This movie goes for-ever. I thought it would never stop. At first it was ok, but then it just got so weirdd!! But I like how it has Robbie Coltrane it it-he's kooL!
The Single WORST version of Alice in Wonderland in the history of the Universe. this makes me feel theyre spitting on the original ideas. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I have not read the book and had just had an exam that day, but I got really confused with what was going on in this film. There was some good performances by the cast, but it was all too confusing. Gene Wilder was excellent and Mirranda Richardson as the Queen played a similar role to what she played in Black Adder.
alice in wonderland is a fav of mines growing up....
plot: On a golden afternoon, young Alice follows a White Rabbit, who disappears down a nearby rabbit hole. Quickly following him, she tumbles into the burrow - and enters the merry, topsy-turvy world of Wonderland! Memorable songs and whimsical escapades highlight Alice's journey, which culminates in a madcap encounter with the Queen of Hearts - and her army of playing cards!
The animation is good, and by using bright colours; the film always seems otherworldly and fascinating...
The music and animation is great. The characters are very wacky....I would highly recommend this to any Disney lovers....
I just hate "Alice in Wonderland", i really do. This movie is well-acted and the costumes are surpreme, but I always hated the story of Alice in Wonderland. All the characters are crazy and obnoxious, rude and annoying.
Pretty effects, but there really was not much else in it. There is a great cast, who do a good job, but there is no fun to the movie at all. It is more faithful to the book then the Disney version, but that does not mean that it is better. Stanley Kubrick?s The Shining was not as accurate to the book as the television series in the late 1990?s, but Kubrick?s is considered a classic and is one of my personal favorite horror films of all time. I can?t believe I just made a reference to the Shining in an Alice in Wonderland review.
The production values are top notch in this mostly-faithful adaptation of Lewis Carrol's novel. Unfortunately, it skews a little too goofy for my tastes, and tries to plug in a bunch of pointless moralizing that just feels forced. But still, the cast put in enjoyable showings, with the notable exception of the horribly miscast Whoopi Goldbarg as the Cheshire Cat.
The sets, costumes, and visual effects are great though. Despite its shortcomings, you should see it just because it's just so darn pretty.
Alice follows a white rabbit down a rabbit-hole into a whimsical Wonderland, where she meets characters like the delightful Cheshire Cat, the clumsy White Knight, a rude caterpillar, and the hot-tempered Queen of Hearts and can grow ten feet tall or ...
This movie was pretty good. I used to watch it all the time. Its pretty boring at times, especially near the end when Alice is in the maze. I like the Disney version better but this version is entertaining.
I know this is sad, but i like Alice in Wonderland, when i first watched it i thought it was fascinating, weird and brilliant. I still really love it; it is the mystery and random, thought-provoking confussion of this outstandingly complicated world.
