One of the best movies made with strong female leads, great direction and writing. I mean Bette is in it so do I need to say more???

How to be a harpy, advanced course. Not the kind of story which interests me more, but we must recognize dialogs are brilliant.

I thought the performances is where this film shines.

The bitchiest film ever made. An outstanding script with dynamite performances. It's a brutal attack on Hollywood and the fanaticism with celebrities. Timeless and way ahead of its time. It makes a nice companion piece to both A Star is Born (with Garland) and Scorsese's King of ...( read more)Comedy.

    The Review:

Truly one of the best classic I ever seen, so far. The dialogue is scintillating, the characters and the actress, simply amazing, great direction, great ...( read more)screenplay, nice score.

That's All About Eve. What made me take my hats off is the fact that all the actress were playing at the same level and so the actors. 14 Oscar nominations weren't hyperbolic. It deserve it.

"Funny business, a woman's career - the things you drop on your way up the ladder so you can move faster. You forget you'll need them again when you get back to being a woman. That's one career all females have in common, whether we like it or not: being a woman. Sooner or later, we've got to work at it, no matter how many other careers we've had or wanted."

I have a huge love for films such as this. I am not sure why, this antiquated feelings and this old-fashioned thoughts of mine are ever so present and they extend to these past films too. A simple film in essence, but what a film. Nothing for granted, there is a sense of having e...( read more)verything right, compare this with the other lower tier films of its era and you can see why this is great and those are either mediocre or lower, this was done right and you can only have it right. Right meaning maybe either control of acting and emotions, not overdone. Or, it can be sense of pacing and style, never campy or anything. That's not to say camp is bad, but to be part of this, you follow rules, to be part of the Golden Age, there is a standard not of quality, but stereotype and this firs that mould perfect.

Damn this film was good. Bette Davis is awesome. I can't believe her and/or Anne Baxter didn't win Best Actress.

I was surprised when i first watched this at how awesome it was. I mean it has a lot of things about it that are considered flaws in todays films the biggest probably being that it's in black and white. But It really stands to time. Plus Bette Davis is my favorite actress and she...( read more) delivers an amazing preformance...she should have one the oscar for that too bad they shunned her but that seems to be how the Academy works I've found.

Those eyes sparkles, i would say the plot is timeless, so many wannabes, who will do whatever it takes to get that coveted statue cum fame, Ann Baxter is good but one cant outshine Ms Davies, she is the Ms. Margo Channing, period!

One of my favourites. Bette Davis at her best. I loved the scene Eve got slapped LOL

nominated for a record 14 oscars, this is truly one of the most important films in history. the first hour actually bored me incredibly and anne baxters performance was a little over the top, but bette davis and george sanders put in powerful performances and the final 80 minute...( read more)s of the movie were wonderful. the diologue was clever and meaningful and the characters were developed incredibly well, making this a fine film with an ending worth every minute of the tedious start to the film. a must see for big time movie fans.

One of my favorite classics, i love the way it has an almost secretive message about karmatic situations and the finer things in life.

The ambitious Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) gets close to the great and temperamental stage artist Margo Channing (Bette Davis) and her friends Karen Richards (Celeste Holm) and her husband, the play-writer Lloyd Richards (Hugh Marlowe); her boyfriend and director Bill Sampson (Ga...( read more)ry Merrill); and the producer Max Fabian (Gregory Ratoff). Everybody, except the cynical critic Addison DeWitt (George Sanders), believe that Eve is only a naive, humble and simple obsessed fan of Margo and they try to help her. However, Eve is indeed a cynical and manipulative snake that uses the lives of Margo and her friends to reach her objectives in the theater business. Co-starring Marilyn Monroe as Miss Casswell.

This is Bette at her best. I wish I could have been on that set. Addison is a Queen for the top list

::sigh:: If only I could write HALF as well...

The dialogue is like a whip to the spine. Sharp, strong and so quick that it makes this movie even more of a joy to watch again and again if only to catch it all.

The story is compelling, and gives an interesting inside look at the...( read more) drama behind the scenes of theater-life.

More than that, the acting is ridiculously good. I adore the relationship between Margo and her boyfriend Bill. Their back and forth sass and subtle sweetness is remarkable...

    This film is simply classic.

...as for Eve, I'd like to slap the broad.

Bette Davis and Anne Baxter shine in this classic tale of people and the things they will do to get famous--deceit, betrayal, blackmail, and sex. Nominated for the most Oscars in movie history, "All About Eve" is an irresistable classic that still rings true today.
  • July 25, 2008
Fasten your seatbelts, its gonna be a bumpy film!!! Bette Davis gives here the performance of her life. She embodies Margo Channing perfectly, as this character totally reflected her real life. Bette Davis is excellent as always in this great but creepy movie. Anne Baxter is also good too but is so creepy I hated her.

All About Eve is full of great dialogue and incredible, incredible acting. However there were points that dragged and I found myself getting a bit bored. But it was that last 20 minutes that knocked me on my ass. Bette Davis was brilliant and as much as I hated her character, Ann...( read more)e Baxter was the ultimate rotten opportunistic bitch. And for as brief a role as Marilyn Monroe had she was great. The only downside was that it took a while to get going, but once it did it was indeed a bumpy night...

Scathing, hillarious, affecting and the acting is top notch. Probably the best film about star culture ever made.
  • July 14, 2008
This is one classic you have here.
  • July 8, 2008
Why did it take me so long to see this movie? It was fantastic!
  • June 30, 2008
A GREAT FILM! Marilyn is a very small role and is solely here for looks. She barely even speaks here, creating a mystery about who she is!
  • June 22, 2008
They don't make them like this anymore. I knew the director when I was a child. I got to hold the real Sarah Siddons award. And the oscar.

Do you ever get the feeling that sometimes an actor really isn't acting? That they're just channeling who they really are as a person and throwing it up on the screen and pretending that it's a performance? That's the feeling that I get when watching Elizabeth Taylor "play" man-e...( read more)ating self-destructive addicts, James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, and Bette Davis in this movie and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (that last one has more to do with the hatred Davis had for Joan Crawford). Davis plays an aging grand dame who gets caught up in the scheming, backstabbing ways of a young up-and-coming actress. Oh, except this took place in the world of the theater, and not in the world of film. So it's totally not autobiographical to Davis' life. Except that's a huge lie. Davis plays a smart-assed, willful, stubborn child-like woman who is prone to bouts of tantrums, depression, and anger. See? The best performances are often the ones that often contain complete honesty.

Loved it, but hated Bette Davis Grrr

"Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" This is maybe the best Bette Davis, and she had so many good roles. George Sanders is unbelievably good in this. Magnificent film.

Seen 1/2 but Davis is a miracle.

While I found it an interesting watch I don't see in it everything that others apparently do - sure it was good, but is it really worth raving about? When it came out maybe, but now? I did like Marilyn Monroe's small role though, and personally found no fault with any of the tec...( read more)hnical elements. I possibly would watch it again if it was on at a reasonable time, but wouldn't necessarily make an effort to re-watch it.

I was rather disappointed in this. This movie receives tons of praise and it, along with Sunset Boulevard, was one of the most highly-praised films of 1950. This didn't live up to my expectations at all which will be explained in just a moment.

This movie tells the story of an a...( read more)ging Broadway actress and an up-and-comer trying to become a star. I didn't really get all that excited about the plot and it became less and less interesting as the picture wore on. It was rather straightforward and I didn't find anything all that unpredictable about it. The movie ends in much the same way it began which was a reasonably effective plot device, but doesn't add all that much.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this film was the acting. All over the place I've read that Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson somehow canceled each other out and therefore neither one of them won the Best Actress award that year. Gloria Swanson delivered what is likely the best acting performance I have ever seen in Sunset Boulevard whereas Bette Davis was far inferior to Swanson in this picture. In fact, I'm not sure if she should even count as a leading actress - Anne Baxter had more screen time and was also nominated for Best Actress. I would argue Baxter was more deserving of the award than Davis although they're both far below Swanson. The award went to Judy Holliday but I have not seen Born Yesterday so I can't comment on the decision.

Continuing with the acting, Bette Davis just seemed too old. While I realize she was supposed to be playing an older character, this just did not seem like Bette Davis. I've seen Davis in two other films from the 1930s and that is the Bette Davis I think of when I think of Bette Davis. While she went on to make plenty of movies after this film, I would argue her best years were behind her at this point despite the fact most critics say this is her best performance. She was nominated for 8 Academy Awards prior to this film (winning 2) but just twice more after this (winning 0).

Overall, this is a decent movie, but nothing all that spectacular. It competed with Sunset Boulevard in almost every category at the Academy Awards that year and I found this to be a far inferior film. It's certainly worth a watch but probably not worth a repeat viewing.

    70/100
