All About Eve Reviews and Ratings

While I found it an interesting watch I don't see in it everything that others apparently do - sure it was good, but is it really worth raving about? When it came out maybe, but now? I did like Marilyn Monroe's small role though, and personally found no fault with any of the tec...( read more)hnical elements. I possibly would watch it again if it was on at a reasonable time, but wouldn't necessarily make an effort to re-watch it.

I was rather disappointed in this. This movie receives tons of praise and it, along with Sunset Boulevard, was one of the most highly-praised films of 1950. This didn't live up to my expectations at all which will be explained in just a moment.

This movie tells the story of an a...( read more)ging Broadway actress and an up-and-comer trying to become a star. I didn't really get all that excited about the plot and it became less and less interesting as the picture wore on. It was rather straightforward and I didn't find anything all that unpredictable about it. The movie ends in much the same way it began which was a reasonably effective plot device, but doesn't add all that much.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this film was the acting. All over the place I've read that Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson somehow canceled each other out and therefore neither one of them won the Best Actress award that year. Gloria Swanson delivered what is likely the best acting performance I have ever seen in Sunset Boulevard whereas Bette Davis was far inferior to Swanson in this picture. In fact, I'm not sure if she should even count as a leading actress - Anne Baxter had more screen time and was also nominated for Best Actress. I would argue Baxter was more deserving of the award than Davis although they're both far below Swanson. The award went to Judy Holliday but I have not seen Born Yesterday so I can't comment on the decision.

Continuing with the acting, Bette Davis just seemed too old. While I realize she was supposed to be playing an older character, this just did not seem like Bette Davis. I've seen Davis in two other films from the 1930s and that is the Bette Davis I think of when I think of Bette Davis. While she went on to make plenty of movies after this film, I would argue her best years were behind her at this point despite the fact most critics say this is her best performance. She was nominated for 8 Academy Awards prior to this film (winning 2) but just twice more after this (winning 0).

Overall, this is a decent movie, but nothing all that spectacular. It competed with Sunset Boulevard in almost every category at the Academy Awards that year and I found this to be a far inferior film. It's certainly worth a watch but probably not worth a repeat viewing.

    70/100

Great acting by Bette Midler and Anne Baxter.. but I think they smoke too much. No scene without ppl smoking in it.

With a smart script and a wonderful cast, All About Eve seemed as if it were going to be brilliant. And that it was. Sort of. The acting was superb, as was the direction and plot. It was also clever and interesting. Where this movie fails, however, is in its run time. With nearly...( read more) 2 and a half hours of footage, the film gets boring easily. An hour of it seems like an eternity. So in all, the movie feels like 2 eternities and a half. In other words, this movie is an ideal example of the fact that too much of a good thing can be bad. Still, this movie isn't a bad pick if you have patience and like complex dramas. If you don'tm though, steer away. It will be a bumpy night.

The screenplay is amazing beyond words. And Bette Davis is at her best. Fantastic movie.

you will go through every emotion in this. AND where can you see Marilyn Monroe gazing at Betty Davis as if she were looking at a diva?

I am not the biggest Bette Davis fan, but there is no denying her acting prowess. She offers a standout performance among a great ensemble cast. George Sanders is wonderful and strong as the smart and seemingly all seeing Addison DeWitt. Anne Baxter gives a performance that would...( read more) have against most any other actress won her the Oscar I think. Bette Davis is stupendous and fiery which can be seen her theater spat with Hugh Marlowe. This theater intrigue can best be seen if you follow Davis? advise and ?Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!?

A truly wholesome film... everything works! The script, the direction, the cinematography, the amazing cast: Bette Davis (in one of the best performances i've ever seen), Anne Baxter (great as well), Celeste Holm, Hugh Marlowe and Thelma Ritter were pretty good. Gary Merrill cert...( read more)ainly made an effort but didn't measure up to the rest of the actors, and George Sanders, the only one in the cast to get an Oscar for his performance here, didn't do it for me. Anyway, it's a terrific experience, with a very good (though very small) part from Marilyn Monroe.

Bette Davis at her finest. My favorite movie of all time!

Extremely developp and strong, the story is simply amazing, the performance remarquable and well, this old movie is a great one, a instant classic. Great movie. Bette Davis was brilliant and Eve was a little brat.

If you ever wondered how a masterpiece film could be made of a bunch of scheming women clawing out each other's eyes, look no further than this one. Great example of how to make a top-notch soap opera-type flick without going over the top. Terrific script, terrific performances.

"If nothing else, there's applause... like waves of love pouring over the footlights."

The quality of All About Eve has been much discussed and widely acclaimed in the decades following its release. All About Eve is a truly incredible movie that is hard to...( read more) describe accurately in words. The film still holds the record for the most amount of Academy Award nominations - as this screen gem received an unfathomable amount of 14. Just this merit in mind should be enough to warrant a screening. The themes of jealousy, manipulation, and betrayal richly unfold on screen with this exceptional film noir loosely adapted from a story by Mary Orr. The story of this film is really quite simple; Margo Channing (Davis) is a star of the theatre who features in plays written by Lloyd Richards (Marlowe), and under the direction of her boyfriend and director Bill Sampson (Merrill). Margo has everything; fame, fortune and adoring fans. But one evening after Margo completes another performance her career is altered when one of her friends brings Eve Harrington (Baxter) into her life. Eve is one of Margo's fans who is obsessed; she watches every play that Margo features in and on every night it is being performed. Eve quickly wins the heart of Margo and her friends when she tells them the story of how she became a dedicated fan. Soon Margo incorporates Eve into her daily life. Eve loyally assists in any way she can. But a theatre critic (Sanders) begins seeing through Eve's elaborate performance and scheme. It would be unthinkable to reveal more about the film's plot. As the film opens we are introduced to all the characters via fascinating narration as an award ceremony unfolds. Then the film uses heavy flashbacks as we look at the aforementioned plot. Needless to say, the film is all about Eve. One of the first things that struck me was the very intricately written screenplay by director Mankiewicz. The lines of dialogue are highly intriguing and are transformed to the screen skilfully using a fantastic cast. Bette Davis has never been better. She feels plausible and real as a famous star who is now struggling to hold onto her career. She was nominated for an Oscar with good reasoning. Anne Baxter was also nominated for an Oscar. Her portrayal is simply stunning to watch. The script was already good enough, but these two title actresses do wonders to that screenplay and nail their characters. The supporting cast is full of big names. George Sanders was very articulate and skilled in bringing his character to life. Also as the narrator he needed a voice that was easy to listen to. The opening few moments of narration already had me engaged. All About Eve is a true classic that suffers from few flaws. The film has always been widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. I can't blame them. You can only see it to believe how incredible the film really is.

Why did I wait so long to see this film? All about Eve is an adult themed film (not porn) with great dialogue and wonderful performances by the entire cast. This is a great classic film that everyone should see once in their life.

You can't ask for a better cast:Bette Davis, Anne Baxter and Marilyn Monroe landing a small supporting role. This great drama is all about the glamour, the jealousy, insecurity, betrayal, setting plans, using people and success. It really show the complexity of women AND men in d...( read more)ifferent age and positions. Bette Davis made me change my mind about her acting skills-which is great in All About Eve, and as my first Anne Baxter movie, I have to say she really played the "natural-born actress" part. The ending was very clever and honest, loved it!

Bette Davis is literally almost perfect in this classic that is truly great. The script is one of the best ever written and sparkles with comedy and classic lines. This classic should be viewed by everybody.

One of the best movies I've watched in a long time. Everyone talks about Bette Davis in this movie, but I think it's Anne Baxter who makes the show. She's completely believeable as both innocent and conniving.

I got rather frustrated with this film- just far too obvious and hasn't got enough depth. I was quite entertained by Marilyn Monroe's cameo though- the film needs more Marilyn!

One of my favorite movies..and for good reason. fantastically sharp, biting, and beautifully executed. Bette Davis stole the show, in this blunt portrayal of the calculated backstabbing that showbiz is known for.

I should to say that i did buy it for seeing Marilyn Monroe in her very short role. I knew that it was a SHORT role, but i did not Knew that it was at this point. Only few minutes with her, and she has only 2-3 sentences to say.

But, it's surprising for me, because even if i d...( read more)id buy it for Marilyn, and even she is not MORE than few minutes in it, i did appreciated this movie more than i thought.

And, honestly, Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) is really pleasant (and EASY) to HATING. I did hated her til the end.
