All Quiet on the Western Front Reviews and Ratings

  • November 12, 2007
A great movie about the madness of the fratricide 1rst World War seen by young german recruits and the crazyness of trench warfare where armies advance only to retreat the next day loosing thousands of young men for nothing.
There are some astonishing scenes in this movie like t...( read more)he gripping moment when Paul, the german protagonist, helps the french soldier he wounded in the middle of the battlefield.
Although its noticeable that this is a 1930s movie, it still appeals to a modern viewer because its in a way very modern. Its a statement against the horrors of war. To think that Hitler took power in germany just a few years after this came out...
    Highly recommended.

It is a genius book, i hope the movie doesn;t ruin the whole plot.
  • October 17, 2007
Another black and white classic, however a bit tedious, but it got better as the film went on...acting from all the cast was intense...especially from "Lew Ayres"...not bad to look at either! Also liked the character who played "kat"....he was a riot!

  • July 29, 2007
A solid story with some great gritty moments that capture the reality of war.
  • July 27, 2007
    The first great anti-war film
  • July 22, 2007
This movie is so old - 1930-ish - it is barely a talkie - and yet so contemporary in its loathing for warfare.
  • July 16, 2007
    Best war movie. Ever.
  • July 8, 2007
Pretty good. So was the book.
  • June 26, 2007
A cinematic milestone that evokes the horrors of the war, an ill-fated moment that stays for a lifetime.
  • June 18, 2007
it was nice... the ending was sad.
  • June 18, 2007
One of the sadest endings ever done..

I think it was the very first long-film recorderd with sound. I recommend to wach this rather then the Re-make.
This got more feeling in it!

  • May 21, 2007
Long movie, but it was good. Um... taste that propaganda.
  • May 20, 2007
One of the oldest Great War Movies. It's messege of how governments try to manipulate the reality of war to show it as glorious will always ring true.
  • May 14, 2007
Good film and well representing of the war, but i feel almost blasphemous for saying that i take off points for the dated, tired feel. There is also a lack of any soundtrack, which I think could have improved the atmosphere. The ending is brilliantly classic.
  • May 6, 2007
Brooding movie, too long, but a stinging indictment of war non the less
  • May 4, 2007
Showing the horrors of war so well. I found out many years after reading the book that the military brass hated the Christmas truce of 1914. They had to force the soldiers to fight again after they had crossed battle lines on that day.
  • May 2, 2007
Considered the pinnacle of anti-war films, a must-see, if only once.
  • May 1, 2007
This anti-war poem is as beautiful today as it was in 1930. From life in a trench that's constantly being bombed to a soldier returning home and being branded a coward for speaking out against war, this truly captures the horrors that, although I have never witnessed it, soldiers...( read more) must see.
