All Quiet on the Western Front Reviews and Ratings

A bit more difficult than most movies to watch cause its OLD. Incredible movie though, really showed the reality of WWI.
  • May 21, 2007
Long movie, but it was good. Um... taste that propaganda.
  • May 20, 2007
One of the oldest Great War Movies. It's messege of how governments try to manipulate the reality of war to show it as glorious will always ring true.

Good film and well representing of the war, but i feel almost blasphemous for saying that i take off points for the dated, tired feel. There is also a lack of any soundtrack, which I think could have improved the atmosphere. The ending is brilliantly classic.

Brooding movie, too long, but a stinging indictment of war non the less
  • May 4, 2007
Showing the horrors of war so well. I found out many years after reading the book that the military brass hated the Christmas truce of 1914. They had to force the soldiers to fight again after they had crossed battle lines on that day.
  • May 2, 2007
Considered the pinnacle of anti-war films, a must-see, if only once.
  • May 1, 2007
This anti-war poem is as beautiful today as it was in 1930. From life in a trench that's constantly being bombed to a soldier returning home and being branded a coward for speaking out against war, this truly captures the horrors that, although I have never witnessed it, soldiers...( read more) must see.

The book was great however I thought the movie didnt do as well. There was some good action scences and whatnot. It doesnt live up to the book.

  • December 31, 2006
A very good film. It is amazing that this film was made when it was because it is both anti-war and told from the other side.

  • October 30, 2006
Considering it was released in 1930, this is a classic piece of filmmaking even today. Very brave to be created so soon after WW1, and at a time of heavy censorship in films, this film, essentially created what we call a "War Film"
A touching story about how War destorys lives, ...( read more)even if people survive it, it holds up today still, and is recommended viewing for anyone. Watching the reinacted battle scenes shot in black and white, with a grainy early camera and in the style of early documentary footage is as eerie as it is spectacular.
    Definitive Movie
  • October 26, 2006
I can't believe that any modern re-make would ever be able to bring the book to life as this one does. The lack of CGI makes (almost) everything look very realistic. A modern-day remake would probably not have the same earnestness and proximity to the subject matter - after WWI...( read more)I, that era had disappeared completely. The people making this version could actually remember WWI.

The movie could benefit from a digital remastering of both the sound and film quality, and it suffers in comparison with the book due to the lack of first-person narration, but otherwise, it's basically unbeatable.
  • October 17, 2006
One of the best endings to a movie... EVER! That's pretty much all I remember about it...
  • October 11, 2006
Another good anti-war film set during WWI on the German side.
  • September 29, 2006
    The book was so good.
