So awfully long and drawn out that it just totally bored me - in spite of Jude Law's presence lol

With an all star cast led by Sean Penn (who yet again pulls off a great performance), this film requires your full undivided attention. Based on the 1946 novel by Robert Penn Warren this film is a political journey to the top and everything that is met along the way.

Steven Zaillian's film is a remake of the 50s political thriller based on a rather famous book. His 2006 version is the worst film of the year - which was saying something! Sean Penn stars as a Louisiana senator who is running for office. Observing his rise to power, this film is...( read more)

Critic Reviews
All the King's Men is full of bits that work; unfortunately, they never quite add up to a whole. full review
It's too full of itself; it's too convinced of its own value to be much of any to audiences. full review
In the end this murky remake functions mainly as a plain-wrapper setting for a fancy piece of acting that gets lost in a void. Who needs it? Who needed it in the first place? full review
We never quite know what Willie Stark does stand for, aside from the fact that we're repeatedly told he's a man of the people. Penn's performance has the opacity of solid brick. full review
All the King's Men aspires to be a profound commentary on political corruption, but it's more of a vehicle for scenery-chewing by Sean Penn. full review
Overthought, overwrought and thuddingly underwhelming. full review
Like an electioneering candidate, Steve Zaillian's version of All the Kings Men makes a lot of promises but fails to deliver the goods.
All the King's Men has all the ingredients of thrilling political drama without actually being very dramatic. full review
Sean Penn demonstrates how a great Method actor can make the world's most unconvincing rabble-rouser. full review

April 14, 2007Yeah A Robert Penn Warren novel....Still since it is possible to say too much about a movie, in that spirit, see this one for Sean Penn's passion (borderline megalomania), & Anthony Hopkins' as a Southern Judge & incredibly cute Jude Law (who lost his accent & donned a Southern accent for this flick)!!
