Starts well, then it becomes the usual feel-good-cliche-fest that Crowe loves to make. The supporting cast helps a lot, except Kate Hudson that is, that woman should not be allowed to work in movies ever again.

a film that gets a bit silly at moments but provides some great introspection and clever moments. the music is great and the characters are played well. a solid film.

Cute movie. It actually fools you into thinking it means something in the first forty-five minutes, where it shares a surprisingly illuminating perspective on idol worship and the egotism behind the classic rock scene. Almost Famous actually makes a really strong statement indict...( read more)ing the music it tries to uphold; if you're not repulsed by Stillwater and, by proxy, all of the venerated bands of the 70s, then you're obviously not getting the message. But I don't think Crowe had the spine to stick to this tack, if it was even his tack at all (maybe he actually did admire this era?) as he turns the movie into sentimental slush in the last half - good fortune falls into William's lap time after time, and his distance from most of the band's drama makes it really difficult to get into the film. As the movie's sole sympathetic character, the audience needs to experience the pain of the band through him, or else the emotional resonance gets drowned in the utter inanity of the band's behavior. But he's just never close enough, except in one woefully contrived plane scene, so awful that it threatens to reveal the movie as a fraud.

Almost Famous just sinks like a stone in its last half. It moves from an airy, fun, intelligent comedy to something treacly and implausible. It becomes forced.

When I was 13, Crowe's coming-of-age love letter to life on the road in the golden age of rock was spellbinding. When I saw it a few years later, it didn't quite hold up. While I'm not old enough to comment on the film's assumed historical authenticity, I can criticize its intent...( read more)ions, namely: cashing in on nostalgia in baby boomers/trying to make money off of the soundtrack (which does have some great songs), and generally trying to please too wide an audience. Patrick Fugit is miscast in the lead, relying almost exclusively on stock 'shy arty teenager' mannerisms, and most of the supporting actors find themselves in that dismally familiar acting quandary of trying to 'play it cool,' smirking anxiously at the audience because they're in Cameron Crowe's big important 70s rock 'n' roll movie. In spite of its flaws, "Almost Famous" isn't a bad movie. Music fans should enjoy it for what it is.
