Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman) directed this comedy about two hapless explorers -- hard-drinking trapper Bartholomew Hunt (the late Chris Farley in his last major role) and foppish Leslie Edwards (Matthew Perry) -- who lead an ill-fated 1804 expedition through the Pacific Northwest in a hopeless, doomed effort to reach the Pacific Ocean before Lewis and Clark. Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"Unfortunately, Farley's unintended farewell is hardly memorable."
‑ Joe Heim, Seattle Times
"All we're left with is a lame script and dithering direction, a lethal combination."
‑ David Kronke, Los Angeles Times
"There's a difference between a stupid movie and a movie populated by stupid characters, and director Christopher Guest shows that distinction with Almost Heroes."
‑ Serena Donadoni, Metro Times (Detroit, MI)
"Farley is as energetically crude as ever, but both Perry and director Christopher Guest, who was behind the classic This Is Spinal Tap, seem uncomfortable with the material."
‑ John Ferguson, Radio Times
"The late Chris Farley's last stand"
‑ Kevin Fiddler, Henderson Home News (Henderson, NV)
"All of the guys on the expedition are dumb, and they say and do dumb things in dumb ways, dumbly."
‑ Paul Tatara, CNN.com
"Those hallmark Farley situations, when he bursts into apoplexy over some challenge or outrage, seem unconvincing here. As for Perry, he doesn't show nearly enough charm or ego to be of interest."
‑ Ron Givens, New York Daily News
"The gags rely heavily on boogers, bird poo and sheep dung, and Farley falls down with monotonous regularity."
‑ Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide's Movie Guide
"[A] sorry excuse for a comedy."
‑ Robert Roten, Laramie Movie Scope
"It's clear, his death notwithstanding, that Farley is the funniest thing about this silly piece of celluloid."
‑ John R. McEwen, Film Quips Online
"This 1998 comedy set in the early American west isn't unwatchable, just bad."
‑ Lisa Alspector, Chicago Reader
"The plot isn't merely stupid, but heartless; viewers aren't given a single reason to watch beyond the anticipation of seeing Farley fall off more scenery."
‑ John Krewson, AV Club
"You just wish it were half as funny as it tries to be."
‑ M. K. Terrell, Christian Science Monitor
"A forgettable farce with no flavor...utterly flaccid and foolish. It wastes the comedic capabilities of Farley and Perry who deserve much better"
‑ Frank Ochieng, TheWorldJournal.com
"Pure, adulterated junk."
‑ Gary Brown, Houston Community Newspapers
