A very good film based on true events, as a group of young wannabe gangsters take things too far. A great performance from all of the young assembled cast. A lot better than you would expect from such young actors. Well worth checking out.

A good but sad story with great performances all around make this movie! Ben Foster can do no wrong! I only had a couple of problems with this film, it left me with some unanswered questions but they're only minor things. This was a good film though.

A lot better than I expected with a cast featuring Justin Timberlake. Ben Foster I think landed on my favorite actors list after this preformance.

This is the sort of movie you watch after you get a call from your sister and her drunk friend at 2 and pick them up and realize you're too energetic now to fall asleep but don't feel like doing anything remotely intellectually stimulating. I only watched this for Emile Hirsch wh...( read more)o, as it happens, has a scary resemblance to one of my friends and for Anton Yelchin (aka Michael Bublé with monkey ears). The other actors performed well, too, except for Justin Timberlake. Stay out of my movies, Justin.

The true life story of a young drug dealer who kidnaps the younger brother of a fellow gangster in order to make him pay his debts. As grim as that sounds, most of the film's light tone and constant frat style partying makes it look more like Almost Famous with wannabe gangsters....( read more) It is a promising premise for a gangster movie, but the script full of bored middle class white kids with nothing to do but get wasted and play at being hip hop style street criminals shows little insight as to how they became who they were, and the dialogue basically just constantly rearranges the words "suck", "my", "dick", "bitch" and "faggot". The bland performances all around also completely fall to draw you in, apart from Sharon Stone's turn as a kind of manic witch of the west in a fat suit which is just bizarre. The direction is lacklustre and photography just looks like a commercial for a travel agents. The result is a film that is guilty of exactly the kind of glamorization that it half-heartedly criticizes, and has a lot more in common with The Fast And The Furious than Goodfellas.

Was more good than it was bad. The "twists" in the story were pretty expected, however the acting wasn't too bad. Whe knew JT could look so scuzzy.

NOT as good as I hoped it would be
  • October 24, 2009
This one of those films that I swerved as I doubted that it would be any good with Willis and Timberlake. At the moment I'm stuck in a holiday home with only 4 channels and BBC showed it. I like it when a film suprises me, and this did just that. This awful story is about loyalty...( read more), I hoped that people would come to their senses the further the film progressed. There are some amazing performances, particularly Ben Foster, who's unhinged performance as Tattoo was worth watching just for him.

This movie is on fire. An edgy and startling film, definitely starts the 2007 movie year off with a bang! full review

There are in fact no bad performances in this picture. The events depicted are often ugly and sometimes repulsive, but Cassavetes never flinches from depicting them fully full review

There's more voyeurism going on here, and less insight into a certain culture (the young and the wasted), than the filmmakers would probably admit to, but the performances are scarily real, and the ou... full review

Rather than turn the camera away when disaster strikes, [director Cassavetes] keeps his suffering characters in close, uninterrupted focus, pushing us squarely into their pain. full review

Having just seen this, I have to say I was disappointed (sorely; read my 1.5 star review!)... Justin Timberlake proved himself a potentially strong young actor in Craig Brewer's brilliant "Black Snake Moan" (2007) but then managed to make me think that's a fluke on the basis of this... Junk, junk, junk...

Justin Timberlake was surprisingly good in this movie. Movie was raw and gritty, my only knock on this movie is that many of the characters were not developed enough to really care about the outcome.
