Well this was something different. It's pne of those films that I dont really feel anything towards after watching it. I can understand why some people dont like it, it is a bit boring at times and sometimes it looks like the story doesnt have anywhere to go. It does touch on important issues that are happening in America, which is good and all. But overall I didnt really like the film. Mandy Moore, I usually like her films but I didnt like her character at all. Her boyfriend I felt really sad for. The host Hugh Grant was really weird. But the singing was great.
This satire doesn't show much respect for anything. A dumb president and his adviser, clearly reminiscent of Bush and Cheney, Arabic terrorists, white trash American Idol contestants and an arrogant host, all are being treated equally by this movie and made fun of. The only likable character is actually (and intentionally) the singing dancing terrorist, which says a lot. In other words, the script is actually pretty smart in all its exaggerated yet spot on observations on those topics. What's lacking are some really big laughs, though. The cast is well picked and makes up for the lack of jokes. Entertaining and actually quite mean.
This movie flew way under the radar for me - I never knew it existed until recently. It was a fun flick, with plenty of satire about shows like American Idol. The cast was well chosen - Hugh Grant was excellent, as usual, and Dennis Quaid did a great job as the president (I was amused at how ignorant the president was portrayed to be!) Overall, it was quite cynical, but was an enjoyable watch nonetheless. I especially enjoyed the storyline involving the Afghani terrorist-turned singer.
I had to give this movie half a star because it IS sort of funny, and because it won't let you give it zero stars. I pretty much love all movies and this is the WORST movie I've EVER SEEN! The ending is completely the weirdest, most insensitive, non-funny, stupid thing I've ever seen in my entire life. Two questions: 1) Who in the world came up with this movie (especially the ending) in the first place? and 2) Who in the world decided, "Okay, this sounds like a great movie! Let's make it!"? Think about it... I actually liked Mandy Moore's character and Hugh Grant's character being together and then the ending just COMPLETELY ruined that obviously! DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!
In-One-Sentence : Absurdly ridiculous, the can make it better than this!
Bigger Picture About The Movie On the morning of his re-election, the President decides to read the newspaper for the first time in four years. This starts him down a slippery slope. He begins reading obsessively, reexamining his b)lack and white view of the world, holing up in his bedroom in his pajamas. Frightened by the President's apparent nervous breakdown, his Chief of Staff pushes him back into the spotlight, booking him as a guest judge on the television ratings juggernaut (and the President's personal fave), the weekly talent show American Dreamz. America can't seem to get enough of American Dreamz, hosted by self-aggrandizing, self-loathing Martin Tweed, ever on the lookout for the next insta-celebrity. His latest crop of hopefuls includes Sally, a conniving steel magnolia with a devoted, dopey veteran boyfriend, and Omer, a recent Southern Californian immigrant (who just happens to be a bumbling, show tune singing, would-be terrorist awaiting activation). When both Sally and Omer make it to the final round of Dreamz -- where the President will be judging along with Tweed -- the stage is set for a show the nation will never forget.
And The Review : It was so painful, actually I want to break my TV screen.Yes,I appreciate the works for bringing satire in this movie, but what we can't tolerate is?The dumbness of this movie, everything was out of place, and so messy. For God's Sake, what's crossing Dennis Quaid,Willem Dafoe, and Hugh Grant's minds to involve in this piece of shit.Completely disastrous and believe me,watching American Dreamz is like drinking a glass of "poison" ,killing you softly.Try it if you dare,I have already warned you though.
The 360 Spin:It's so bad,you can even name the disease after watching this movie,A nerve breakdown.RUBBISH with the capital R.
Hugh grant as a bad boy, and it's kind of ironic, just how they make fun of the whole idol and talentshow concept, it just my kind of humor. But there are missing something in it, can't put my fineger on it.
This movie wasn't all that great. The story was almost too hard to following because there was so many different things going on. But I did love Mandy Moore's character's boyfriend and the gay acting Iraqi they were hilarious!
A few funny moments and references to a certain popular program makes a good film for a first viewing, but will definitely struggle for future repeats.
I know a lot of people will really hate this film, I will put this out right now. But! My opinion is this film is genius, relying on a satirical look of the American Nation and their obsession with the hugely popular TV show American Idol. Also, doing parodies on the credibility of recent American Presidents and the war on terror (i thought that was hilarious!). While some people will find the satire tired and stupid, I found it refreshing, and its good to see Dennis Quaid in a good role (the last I saw of him was in that atrocious Vantage Point). All in all I really recommend this movie.
Very twisted, stupid story, but a good parody of 'American Idol' type shows. Hugh Grant is funny in a Simon Cowell-esque role, and Dennis Quaid is hilarious as a president 'remarkably similar' to George W. Bush.
ermmn this is an ok movie...its funn i think that mandy moore is soo hott n sexxi...this is an ok movie i think...its pretty funn :):) all the actors play a good part..i think that hugh grant is a exellent british actor...he's really funny in this movie...this is an enjoyable movie thats pretty funn just because it takes the piss out of pop idol/x-factor which i think are 2 crap tv shows but this movie just takes it out of themn n make it more funnier
Ok so I could see why people hated it, but personally I loved it. I thought Grant did a really good job pulling off the Cowell nature of his character, but out of the two of them Quaid won in my affections, simply for the fact that his performace of a Presdient clearly designed to mock George Bush, was hilarious and often had me in rolling around in laughter! I have to say I'm not a huge fan of Mandy Moore but she wasn't terrible in this film, but overall it was Tony Yalda who made the film for me, as the gay drama queen.
Overall I thought it was a really good satire, based on actual current political events and therefore should earn more marks for being daring (even though it is telling the story in the most stupid way) and it also makes a point about these type of 'reality' shows, and how fake the reality really is!
First fifteen minutes are sheer brilliance; a ridiculous but clearly apt spoof on President Bush perfectly done by Quaid, and the cold, terrifically dark Grant plays on Simon Cowell with ease. Mandy Moore is beautifully cruel and unpredictable. Well cast. Unfortunately the whole potential falls apart within twenty minutes. The rest is a sloping bore lingering too long with uninteresting characters and failing to grab and throttle even the obvious satirical targets. Final ten minutes almost reach the first's height, but the sheer dead-weight of its middle deflates it too much. Had Grant, Quaid and Moore spent more time on their sharper tips and dropped every other character and scene (especially the annoying and silly Omer which completely misses its opportunity to take an ironic stab at terrorism and instead drives into the ground with endless maddening Showtunes) this film mightve worked, and its a shame. Shouldve had it done by the Chaser's boys.
one time i went 2 mollys house and we were watching this and then I had to go home so i missed the ending. I have to get that from blockbuster...remind me to do that
Ok movie about a competition. Who will be the next American Dreamz. There are so many diffrent kinds off people that joins the competition and in the final the President will be one off the judges and we all wait for the final for diffrent reasons.
