Ensign Chuck Palmer (Tyrone Power) is stranded in the Japanese-occupied Philippines after his ship is torpedoed. Linking up with several other American refugees, Palmer helps the Filipinos organize a resistance movement against the enemy. They even manage to construct a few jerry-built radio stations to keep tabs on Japanese fleet movements. Hard to believe that Palmer finds romance under these trying circumstances, but he does, in the form of Jeanne Martinez (Micheline Presle), the wife of a Filipino war hero. Based on the novel by Ira Wolfert, American Guerilla in the Philippines is directed with unvarnished efficiency by Fritz Lang. Standouts in the supporting cast include Tom Ewell as Tyrone Power's wisecracking buddy and Robert Barrat as General Douglas MacArthur. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
Bosley Crowther, New York Times
There certainly is no accounting for the mechanistic nature of the script, for the lapses in continuity or for the lameness of the professionals in the cast.
-
Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
A routine but effective war movie.
-
Trevor Johnston, Time Out
It's not a terrible movie, but eliminating the romance with planter's wife Presle and sprucing up the script might have made rather more of it.
-
Variety Staff, Variety
Footage has some good, male humor mixed in with the derrin-do, and Fritz Lang's direction develops a strong sense of expectancy and suspense in the story-telling.

, TV Guide's Movie Guide
Though critics pummeled the film at the time, it appears now as a top-notch action production with great pace and gusto, having the necessary elements of tension and drive, with an excellent score and lush photography.
