Pretty funny and quirky documentary, but all-in-all it coulda been a reality tv show. I would stay away unless you like filmmaking (or laughing at loser filmmakers).

i liked it. romanticism is a cruel mean bitch. i really like the aspect of the drive and passion one has can also be the monster dictating ones life.
-
I feel ashamed that I laughed so much. It seems the entire movie's appeal is in pitying them, but I did have to watch it for my Film Analysis class.

Some of the funniest stuff you'll ever see. You'll feel like a genius after watching some of these retards.

Wonderful stuff.
I saw this one at round about the same time as Adaptation (same week I think) and again it floored me. The visits to his uncle and trips out with his uncle are very memorable...and Marks determination to get it done, combined with being depressed and wanting to drink the night away...and having a very good honest friend by his side are all things I could relate to.
Making a film is just such a huge undertaking, and its all captured here so well. But not only that, we get to see people in their current situation here too, small bits of their private lives, even if its just a glimpse...it fascinated me. -
Brilliant documentary gives an insight into independent film making at its most honest and weird way.

AMERICAN MOVIE (1999)
directed by Chris SmithIs there anything funnier in life than a guy with a mullet who takes himself WAY too seriously ? This film is like a huge joke but its actually sad to find ourselves laughing at those people.American Movie is a documentary about a small town guy trying to finance a short horror film that he consider a near masterpiece. We get to meet him and all his family and friends and they all believe in him more or less in some ways. We get to see him delivers the newspapers in his car and talk passionately about his «gorgeous black and white shots» or trying to get philosophical about life.
American Movie is a weird portrait, its pathetic but its also very inspiring to see that guy never giving up on his dream - American dream - trying to convince people to give him money and ending up making a film just as bad as what Ed Wood used to make - it takes him a few years to actually finish his short movie. He is extremely dedicated to his project, spending all his money in something we all know is doomed to fail. Its sad, its awkward but its a great piece of reality cause it also shows life in small town and how hard it is to get by and find a decent job in some places.
In the end, even if you laugh hard sometimes, Chris Smith, the director - who worked with Michael Moore on Roger and Me - never tries to show him as a pathetic bastard, he simply follows him and show him as a normal guy, and thats what he is.

Fantastic film! Really, more people need to see it. It's funny, well done, really sucks you in...etc.

This is a hilarious look at an aspiring filmmaker. Its like if the trailer park boys were trying to make a movie.
-
Great and hilarious doc about a struggling amateur filmmaker. I'm sure the filmmakers were inspired by Ed Wood, showing the director as someone with tons of heart and half a gram of talent. Still, a compelling story. It's only weakness is that it makes me and a couple other aspiring filmmakers I know sad because we don't like to think of ourselves this way.

How the hell did this happen? I couldn't stop watching and feeling bad for these desperate, struggling hearts.
-
Despite its sadness, for some strange reason, we love these guys and their eternal positive approach to life (in a blue-collar kind-of-way).
-
This is a great docu/mockumentary about a guy trying to make a movie while juggling all the crap that life can throw at you. This movie means more to me as I get older and can understand the lead's plight.
-
ah considering it was made in my home state where there is nothing to do in the winter...they did alright
-
delusions of grandeur with hilarious results...the American dream as realized by the brain dead one might say...still you have to admire this guys tenacity to get his film made...this is sort of surreal...putting on full display how far away America really is from all the glitz and glam of Hollywood...yet this doc embraces this mans story as inspiration rather than exploitation creating a film with a whole lot of heart and a whole lot of laughs to

"Here is what it think of lottery... It's like, when you play the lottery, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose... But it's better than using drugs or alcohol - Because when you use drugs and alcohol, especially drugs, you always lose."
"Kick fuckin ass- I got a Master Card" -
This movie is hilarious although I don't know if it's supposed to be. Do yourself a favor and just watch it.
-
good movie about a documentary on a documentary....also loved it when i saw my sisters name in the credits
-
I watched this because people said it was good. It's just not my thing though. I couldn't realate to these people at all. It put me to sleep.
-
Just too boring. Sure some parts are just drop dead hilarious and stuff, but its a little too far between.
-
Truly inspring, if guys with this few brain cells can try to make something of themselves we all can.
-
Take a look at this movie and see the serious passion that one person has for film making - regardless of the genre they are representing. ... Well, ok... It's also like a Springer pay-per-view.
-
Awe man, I've got to get this into my collection. It's a must for ANYONE involved in indie-film making.
-
An absolute must see for filmmakers everywhere. This is at times the most hilarious and sad (sometimes in the same scene) I've seen in years.
