American Psycho Reviews and Ratings

An amazing adaption from one of my favorite Bret Easton Ellis novels. It showed about as much as it could, while retaining as much story as possible. Christian Bale was the perfect choice for Patrick Bateman and is completely priceless. The visual setting is a perfect representat...( read more)ion of the 80s yuppie scene and serves as a great backdrop for serial killing.

I've grown to love this movie. At first the notion of a yuppie, seemingly perfect, wall-street trader, who has everything, who has a sick fetish of slicing young woman, and murdering his friends, with all evidence seemingly going ignored, seems silly and over the top. But when I...( read more) saw it from start to finish, a few years later, I realized what I had missed, and it wasn't key scenes in the movie.
This adaptation of ultimate pride greed and bloodlust is shocking, funny, smart exciting...everything you need to be entertained

Christian Bale scared me in this movie. He was so psychotic and the ending...epic.
  • November 13, 2009
Christian Bale!!!!!!!!! Too bad this looks like a dumb movie.
  • November 10, 2009
    What a crazy movie..
  • November 8, 2009
Foreword: I read reviews and analyses to really GET the movie. With that said, I think it's a great movie. (Well, apparently the play on which it is BASED has to get the credit, really). I think the acting was decent but could be better.
Don't look to be entertained. This movie i...( read more)s "deep" in a sense. And it is gruesome.

Va beh oh picchiatemi, ma non mi è piaciuto.

Many people complain about this film because it is not nearly as graphic as the book, however what people have to understand, if Mary Harron made the movie exaclty the same as the book, it would of been out cast by most movie theatres and even banned in some countries. The clever...( read more) aspect of this film adaption is that it manages to be very disturbing as the novel intended without going over the top in the sex and violence catagory. The acting and dialogue in this film was absolutley superb however the most noticable thing about this film is Christian Bale's as the disturbed, rich, wall street psycho Patrick Bateman. I reccomend this film to everyone espically of those who are fans of the novel

I actually skipped school to go see this movie when it came out. How someone cannot enjoy this movie is beyond me. It's nice to see the occasional non-conforming role for Christian Bale. His performance in this movie was flawless. His attitude, taste in music and way that he expr...( read more)esses his emotions are perfect of someone who is losing grip on reality and frankly doesn't really care anymore. Who else would use an expensive designer sleeping bag to dispose of a bloody corpse than someone who is just lost touch. 2 thumbs up, love this movie.
  • November 1, 2009
It was a fun movie. I honestly think it shouldnt be labeled under the "Horror" section at movie stores, considering that its a funny drama, and there is absolutely no horrific scenes in the movie. The movie is meant to be entertaining, and it is, but i think its only good for a o...( read more)nce time view, after that... its boring again.

    !Comercial or Stupid! :|
  • October 27, 2009
Who would've thought that murder could be this comical! Insane, explicit, relentless yet utterly appealing.
  • October 26, 2009
Quirky, so very quirky; simultaneously graphically stylish undoubtedly. A condemnation of the rise of (ultra-)materialism in the 1980s. A so ravishing Christian Bale (by the way, I really loved & miss the pre-Batman Bale who was open to different roles) ever seen on silver screen.
  • October 23, 2009
Corporate America has been slowly killing people for years. At least Patrick Bateman is honest about it...

I just flat out love this moVie! I think that I have seen it around 20 times! Yes its that good. Bale gives his best performance of his carrer as the 27 year old Patrick Bateman. He is such a dork, even if he tries to play it cool. Oh and he is so fucking greedy and doesnt give a ...( read more)shit about anyone, including his finnesse played by the beautiful Reese Witherspoon. His excuse is that he cant take the time off of work. There are sooo many classic one liners in this movie. Makes me laugh every time I watch it. I mean his lines are so chessy its halrious. " I have to return some video tapes" It seems that everything that he learns is from these video tapes that he rents. He goes on killing rampages and idolizes serrial killers as he references several in this movie. Although I found it hysterical that nobody seemed to get his jokes. Most of the time the chareacter seemed serious though and of course a bit of an ass, lol.
There are just way too many good scenes in this movie that its hard to pick a favorite or even a favorite qoute. But I can say that its my favorite movie of all time and gives me my favorite performance out of Bale. Without him the movie wouldnt have worked. Once Leo De Caprio was set to play the role but I'm sure glad he didnt. As good of an actor as he is I very much doubt that he could have pulled off the type of perfomance that Bale did thats for damn sure.

Patrick Bateman: There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.

Patrick Bateman: I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

Patrick Bateman: Do you know what Ed Gein said about women?
David Van Patten: The maitre 'd at Canal Bar?
Patrick Bateman: No, serial killer, Wisconsin, the '50s.
Craig McDermott: So what did he say?
Patrick Bateman: "When I see a pretty girl walking down the street, I think two things. One part wants me to take her out, talk to her, be real nice and sweet and treat her right."
David Van Patten: And what did the other part think?
Patrick Bateman: "What her head would look like on a stick... ?
    [laughs]

Brilliant film. Oneof the most darkly comic films I've ever watched.

horror-extremely dark comedy-thriller starring Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Cloe Sevigny and Jared Leto. based on Bret Easton Ellis's novel of the same name. directed by Mary Harron.

a wealthy and extremely narcissistic New Yorker leads a double life, as both an investment exec...( read more) and a homicidal maniac.

I have heard so many great things about this film and it's performances, so I decided to give this one a try... for the second time.

I don't know if it's the fact that I don't care for films where women are brutalized or that I am not a Christian Bale fan *waits for gasps of shock from all of the Bale fans* but I just can't seem to get excited for this movie.

funny dialogue that made me chuckle a time or two and a pretty damn good 80s soundtrack, but other than that, I just wasn't feeling this one.

maybe third time's the charm? nah. two times was enough for me.
  • October 18, 2009
A nice adaptation of the book. By no means as dark and violent - so if you've read the book, don't be put off watching the film. In my opinion, Christian Bale's best performance to date. Despite being quite intense, there are some excellent laugh-out-loud scenes. Big thumbs up...( read more) from Matt.

Christian Bale deserved an Oscar nomination. Great acting. It was a good film, but I didn't get it at all.

didnt think i would enjoy it but i reallly did :)
  • September 26, 2009
Christian Bale is brilliant in this highly quotable film. It's not my favorite movie of all time, mostly because Patrick Bateman reminds me of my psycho ex-boyfriend, but it's up there on my list.

Fans of Bret Easton Ellis's novel must have counted their blessings when the title role went to Christian Bale and not Leonardo DiCaprio. The most chilling thing about his character may be that he admires the "professionalism" of Huey Lewis and the News. Apart from a grotesque ch...( read more)ainsaw scene, gore is kept to a minimum so as not to detract from the films satirical take on the 80's. The only trouble is that after a while the film, like the novel, suffers from what can only be described as overkill [pun intended]. As usual, Bale immerses himself in the role.
  • September 24, 2009
I've seen this film, as of today, four times and it just seems to get better with each additional viewing. Definately a film that needs to be seen multiple times to be truely appreciated.

A book no one thought could be filmed. It?s fair to say that it doesn?t come close to the book but it?s also fair to say that Mary Harron did as good a job as anyone could have done. This is a brilliant film with some brilliant performances, especially from Bale in one of his bes...( read more)t ever roles. Mary Harron, I have to say is a very underrated director, as far as I can tell, it?s only her sex that seems to be stifling her career which is positively disgraceful!

Well....I was thrilled to watch this for way over a year now...and I think the thing that really lifted the movie criticwise is just Christian Bale. When you think of a role played to perfection, you'll always think Hopkins as Dr.Hannibal Lector, now you could add up Bale as Patr...( read more)ick Bateman. Other than that, I just didn't feel convinced that the caracter was able to do those killings, mainly due to weak plotlines. Now don't get me wrong I fully understood the idea of a disguise of the serial killer behind the good looking businessman, but I just thought it didn't quite fit in. All in all, I just didn't enjoy it that much, hence the fair rating.

So sadistic and psycho. Brutality and obsession delicately disguised with elegancy. Christian Bale is so damn perfect. Good modern psychological horror.

Having read the Easton Ellis novel before watching this film, I would say that Mary Harron's treatment was right and on the spot, and after watching it, I can't think of any other way an adaptation of "American Psycho" would be done. The opening credits automatically created the ...( read more)satiric atmosphere of the novel, and dissolving any expectations of it to be a slasher picture. The real highlight of the film is, without a doubt, Christian Bale. Every expressions and sudden outbursts he created was very "Bateman", and though the film has little violence compared to the novel(I cringe in almost all the torture and murder scenes in the book), it is much more effective and appropriate to the ambiguous premise of the film. Mary Harron made a film that does not capitalize on the violent content of the original material to create a violent picture to attract movie-goers, but instead sticks on the true theme of the book. The only thing that bothered me with this is the lack of importance of Jean's character to Patrick Bateman, like she's just another prey, because originally, Bateman's affection to Jean is so genuine, that she almost became the way for Patrick's long search for redemption and emotional cure. Other than that, this is a faithful adaptation of a great book.

A pretty cool movie, although boring in places. It leaves you with a lot of questions and a lot of wondering afterwards, which is always a good thing! Christian Bale is very good in this movie, and so is everyone else.

I love this movie as it was Christian Bale's big break. It's one of the movies I have which I like to show to other people to see their reaction and hear their ideas on what the ending means. It's part-gore, part-thriller, part-black comedy, but it is mainly a parody on the yuppi...( read more)e culture and how they are so into themselves that they wouldn't notice if their friend was a psychopathic killer. This means that his murders are real because then the film would be pointless. This will be one of the highlights of Bale's career.

The title should have been "Every Yuppie's Wet Dream", since it seems that every time a "young urban professional" opened his/her mouth, the murdering of homeless people and prostitutes is like icing on their consumerist cupcakes. Philosophical monologues about the music of Whitn...( read more)ey Houston and Huey Lewis? Trivia question: how many homicidal maniacs (serial killers and mass murderers) came from outside the United States? I have no idea how close the movie was to the book, but if the latter was as unimaginative and intellectually dull as the movie, then there is no point in either except as softcore porn for the individual who longs to be successful in the corporate business world- in that case, enjoy the movie!

This movie is seriously crazy! I think that's why I like it so much!
