love this movie...how graceful Deborah Kerr was....

It is clear that your fan base is very young. A lot of them find this great movie mushy. I also felt the same way when I first watched An Affair to Remember about 20 years ago. After watching it again recently I just got totally blown away with its beautiful story. The great dial...( read more)ogue between Mr. Grant & Ms. Kerr is so perfectly done. The whole movie makes you feel so good. You are captivated by the love they discover with one another. It begins with a comedic exchange of flirtation that is so brilliantly refreshing and ends with a tragedy so well acted by them both. With the addition of Grants beautiful grandmother, who plays a big role in them falling in love, no one else matters in the movie.
The ending is in a class of its own. The two of them show guilt, bitterness and resentment but in the end they produce all the love and compassion they can offer.
I feel like crying just thinking of it.
    Helloow Im not gay ok!!!
It was voted as the 5th most passionate movie of all time. Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and 2 others were higher. But sorry ? For me it totally is the best movie of all. It is a comedy and a love story so beautifully presented and is appreciated more when you watch it again and again. Something I cant do with other movies.
Go read the reviews of IMDB members if you think Im over doing my comment.
    Mine is so mild!

A lovely, classic, romantic drama. Could've cut out some of the parts with the kids--that took up more time than it needed to.

Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant succeded in having a perfect and very funny romantic chemistrybetween each other. The plot was very, very enjoyable, with impossible-not-to-fall-in-love-with characters.

If it's good enough for Lorelei Gilmore, it's good enough for me.

An average love story, where 2 people meet they then decide after a whirlwind romance to meet in 6 months if they feel the same, only trouble is that she gets involved in a traffic accident en route to meet him! very slow paced and probably made far more famous due to it being th...( read more)e reference point in Sleepless in Seatlle

There's a scene in Nora Ephron's "Sleeples in Seattle" when Suzy (Rita Wilson), a friend of Tom Hanks character bursts into tears while watching this movie. So the tribute to be complete, Nora Ephron makes her leading lady (Meg Ryan) and leading man (Tom Hanks) meet for the f...( read more)irst time on top of the Empire State Buliding.
Also in the '90, Annete Bening and Warren Beatty stared in a remake of "An affair to remember", but even if this two are fine actors, they can't create the magic of Grant and Kerr.
This is a love story betwen two seemingly different people who fall in love with each other almost against their will: Cary Grant is Nickie Ferrante, a notorious womaniser, with a taste for art and beauty, he's engaged to be married to a bossy heiress. Deborah Kerr is Terry Mckay, she's dating for about 5 years a humourless and passionless business man, she's more a trophy pseudo -wife. so this are the premises...
They meet, they fall in love and they make a promise, so that they will meet 6 months later on top of the Emipre buliding, but that won't happen, a tragic accident will prevent them from doing so.
I've seen this movie a few time as a child, but I couldn't comprehend it that well, after another go at it, I must say I was all a smile at the end.
Like most of the movies from that era, a high point of "An affair to remember" was the lines, the subtle irony and their voice tonality.
At almost 2 h, it never gets dull, never drags, allowing the story to develop and to know our characters.Cary Grant is fine as the love-struck man about town, and Kerr is perfect as a cultured, atractive, mature and witty woman, who doesn't want to lo waste a chance at real love.

    It's an affair to remember.

Terry McKay: What makes life so difficult?
    Nickie Ferrante: People.

Of course the leads are great, but then again Cary Grant is playing a manwhore engaged to another woman while he is also actively pursuing Deborah Kerr. That's not romantic, it's skeevy. Naturally, their relationship turns out to be "real", and they are in love. Grant's implie...( read more)d past of womanizing undermines the movie's attempt to make me feel much of anything other than fleeting interest at the swelling string music. Basically, the thin plot is a female fantasy/delusion of grandeur.

I would like to know who the hell actually likes this film. The praise can't be serious. Here's my summary:

A 53 year old Cary Grant plays a never married or employed philandering douchebag who is engaged to an heiress. He takes a cruise ship to Europe without his fiancee and me...( read more)ets a 36 year old Deborah Karr who is also engaged to be married yet decided to take a romantic cruise by herself. They cheat on their significant others and decide to hook up again once they both get jobs and are able to support themselves.

When they get back home, they tell their fiancees about it who both handle it like nobody in history ever would. "Oh, that's fine that you had an affair - I'll still love you and be your friend and be there for you to support you financially while also helping you get together with the person you cheated on me with."

When the cheating whores go to meet, she gets mauled by a car, ends up crippled and misses the appointment. She gets a job teaching homeless kids how to sing and it pays enough for her to enjoy a high-rise New York loft with a housekeeper and Waterford ashtrays. Cary Grant paints a few pictures and a billboard and can afford to take care of her - he goes to their house and they have a boring conversation where he discovers she's a cripple and credits roll. Eat my ass.

There are also several scenes where someone is singing. The movie is practically a musical without the dancing or costumes. It's dreadfully boring and everyone in it is unrealistically horrible.

Okay - to be honest, I started watching about 15-20 minutes in, so I missed the beginning. Maybe the setup is what makes it so amazing. I can't figure out what Meg Ryan was crying about. There's nothing beautiful or romantic about flippantly cheating on someone you're engaged to be married to.

One of my favorite romances. Cary Grant preforms splendidly, as always. although it bothers me how orange he looks!

Read the book at least 3 times. Saw the movie 5 times.

I've seen some of this, and yet I can't imagine it's better than the 1939 version, Love Affair, which probably better deserves to be here. Like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" it seems to be here to cater to the chick-flick contingent.

  • December 29, 2008
What a great romance movie! The first half was incredible and was almost perfect. Then during the second half it got a little stretched out and the ending wasn't that great. But it was still great. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr both do terrific jobs in their roles.
