I usually don't like chick flicks - but this is really, really good. I normally don't care much for Gere either, but this film fits him well :) Oh, and Louis Gossett Jr is way cool!
One of my mum's favorite films and definitely one of mine. It has a touching storyline and can be counted as a chick flick. But it is remarkably effective toward an audience and even made me cry a little.
The greatest military boot came romantic comedy adventure ever told, and no, it's not between the sargeant and the officer candidate. That would be wrong. An all star cast heads up the cast at boot camp, including Richard Gere (Pretty Woman), Deborah Winger (as the love interest), and Louis Gossett Jr. "Lift us up where we belong!" The Reagan Era seems to be all over this, but it's good, and the cowboy jock stuff works. The best romantic comedy of 1982. (ET was the best scifi movie that year).
It didn't do much for me. All the main characters were pretty much jerks. Yes, yes Gossett stood out -- but for what? Being nasty? Bad language, nasty love scenes, no one to root for. Bah.
This isn't a film I'd try and find a copy of, just to watch it. But I randomly caught the first couple of minutes while flicking through the TV channels and decided to give it a go.
In parts, it's a little naff and corny, but all round this is a decent film- with a few really good sad and funny parts during.
Gossett Jr was great (as vindicated by numerous parodies of this film). The ending, of course, was a "classic clip" of Hollywood cinema.
I really didn't fancy watching this film because of the many times i'd seen the last scene. It really isn't my kind of film. I can't understand why Richard Gere dressed as a Pilot does it for so many women. It certainly doesn't do it for me. He was a complete arse all the way through the film. The plot isn't too bad and it managed to keep me interested. I was hoping for more of the war side of things to be honest. You don't even get to see him get in a plane, never mind fly one. The performances aren't bad but not brilliant either. I can understand why people like this film but it just isn't my thing. I don't regret waiting until now to watch it.
wow i have seen this 4 the 1st time n think this is a complete chick flick...this is a good movie but this is a complete chick flick...this has a good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie...richard gere was good as the leading man throughout this movie as he plays a good part..this is a 1980's movie n its was ok i guess its nothing special but its ok i guess
If you were around in the 80s and you loved a girl then you would have seen this. The ultimate chick flic for blokes. Perhaps it was meant to be a training vid.
An Officer and a Gentleman is an uplifting drama, full of powerful moments that will live long in the memory.
However, this movie's real strength lies in its passionate delivery and well defined characters that draw you into the story and makes it very personal.
Officer's love stories when they were ended up in US Naval Academy. the Indonesian movie "Perwira & Ksatria" surely inspired by this movie (but, not good as the original version, of course..)
A Goood movie.Love this one.So romantic.I love the ending the best when Richard Gere's character comes to Debra Winger work and sweeps her off her feet.Gotta love a man in uniform ;)
The last scene of this movie is amazing. And my personal fantasy. We all want to be rescued from our boring jobs by a sexy man in uniform! (And I'm not talkin McDonald's uniform!)
I really do love this film, for a few different reasons. The obvious and main reason being the one and only Richard Gere . . . the fact he has to wear the white navy uniform and thats just HOT. I also love watching films about the army/navy etc. Its just brillant when he has to do all the press ups and the training. How the character is initially alone and doesnt want to help others, but then grows and learns to work in a team.
