Analyze This

Bart Tangredi, Bill Macy, Billy Crystal, Chazz Palminteri, Frank Pietrangolare, Joe Viterelli, Joseph Rigano, Kresimir Novakovic, Kyle Sabihy, Lisa Kudrow, Max Casella, Michael Straka, Molly Shannon, Richard C. Castellano, Robert De Niro, Tony Bennett

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro ...( read more  read more... )walks away with most of the laughs in Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. --David Kronke

Quite a funny take on the pre Soprannos Crime boss in need of therapy. A great comedy slant on the genre, which gives De Niro a familiar genre to play with, yet a chance to explore the Comedy genre. An enjoyable performance from Billy Crystal. The first half is definitely bett...( read more)er than the second, but it?s still worth a watch.

Funny movie with the wonderful Robert De Niro

A nice team up of Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal, but it is no classic. The film rests upon the performances and has a very basic plot without any depth. The filming style is nothing special and has no personality. It is a shallow attempt to capitalize on two big movie stars.

So funny, but with too many uncomfortable parts.

Too many swear words. But it was funny. If it was less vulgar I would like it more. (But of course you need to make mobsters seem real so you gotta make em swear a little...)

From director Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day) comes this smart script put onto a crime film in the tradition of Scorsese and Coppola. Great Godfather reference lol. Almost impossible not to laugh.
