Move over Disney. Twentieth Century Fox's first in-house animated feature may not be "Beauty and the Beast,' but it has more freshness, more verve and more compelling characters than "Hunchback' or "H...( read more  read more... )ercules.'

Although by far not my favourite, this is one that managed to survive the post - Walt holocaust that seems to have influenced animation.

The story begins with Anastasia as a young girl, living the good life with a happy family. In pr...( read more)aise, I appreciated that the filmmakers cut the whole revolution bit short. This could have turned into a Commies vs. Aristocracy brawl, but by getting on with the story we were all saved.

Ten years later, the now eighteen - year - old Anastasia leaves her orphanage in search of her family. My praise for this part is the music, especially the singing voice of Liz Callaway. Would have liked her to do the character voice for Anastasia (instead of Meg Ryan) as well as the singing, but one can't have everything.

The story is typical, and it's quite obvious what's going to happen from about twenty minutes in. Nonetheless, it's touching rather than embarrassing, and the intimacy between Anastasia and Dimitri comes across as a lot more genuine than that between, say, Cinderella and her Prince Charming.

I can't really say there's anything wrong with it, but at the same time the good points aren't enough to make it spectacular.

Not Disney but Don Bluth puts together a nice fresh movie with a solid voice cast!
