Hilarious. One of the first mockumentaries I saw years after Spinal Tap, so it was bound to stand in it's shadow. Years after, now that there are mockumentaries coming out all the time I'm certain this could be looked upon more favourably. Still, a very funny look into a big budget disaster.

This movie is absolutely hilarious. This does for biblical epics what Spinal Tap did to Rock and Roll. The sheer lunacy and absolute believability of the hapless filmmakers make this one of my favorite comedies of all time.

Featuring a premise that probably sounded a lot better on the page than in the finished movie, "And God Spoke" is a mockumentary about two theologically-challenged filmmakers with a dream to adapt the entire Bible into a feature film. ("Our first script was, like, 2000 pages. We had to cut it a bit.") Naturally, everything quickly goes to (ahem) hell, with some of the most crippling obstacles being the penny-pinching studios executives who want to cut Jesus' part from the final project; an incompetent cameraman with a penchant for overly dark shots; violent arguments on set about the number of disciples that Jesus actually had; full-body tattoos on actors who are supposed to be nude; a product placement deal with Coke that requires Moses to carry around a six-pack of soda; and a method-acting Christ who refuses to step out of character for any reason. Although the satire of the film industry is dead-on and sporadically hilarious, the movie is a bit too listless and padded to truly engage. A good try, but only moderately successful.
