    Alan Parker's incredible vision of Frank McCourth's bleak and harrowing story set in the slums of the poverty stricken ireland. a little gem that will earn more recognition with time.

    My husband is one of seven children. He grew up under very modest conditions. Yet compared to this poor kid, his family was rich. Watching this grim tale made me realize how blessed we are to live in the USA!

    emily watson was good... while robert carlyle was okay. the rest of the cast were much the same. it's a story about an irish family in the u.s. coming back to ireland... for some reason. then one of their sons has to work his ass off to get back to where he started. although the ...( read more)plot in that sense is a bit odd it is quite heart rendering to watch... and if not for that reason... for emily watson's performance. she's a pretty good actress
