This one totally slipped under the radar. A friend of mine let me borrow this and promised that it was a great movie. I tend to agree for the most part. Luckily I was a fan of HBO's Oz, in which this movie plays out like a 1.75hr episode of the show. Willem Dafoe is a great actor. I have never seen him give a bad performance. Once again, Edward Furlong is stuck in the supporting role. Aside from Brainscan, he has never had top billing (probably because of the rating of Brainscan). He does have talent but you really don't see him popping up anymore. It was a great surprise to see Tom Arnold pop up as some hillbilly trying to make Furlong his bitch. I can say that this was a good movie, but don't see myself watching it that many more times. It was good once and that is the extent of it for me. Seems that Buscemi can actually make it as a director. Hopefully someone with throw him a few scripts. Also, it was great to see Mickey Rourke play a drag queen named Jan the Actress. The story was average and flat but the acting was great. I would check this one out if you ever get a chance.
This was a pretty decent movie about a young guy who goes to prison and befriends an older convict who helps him out. This shows how gritty prison can be, and finally they try and escape, but do they make it?
"Animal Factory" is an ok prison drama directed by Steve Buscemi. Willem Dafoe and Edward Furlong are good in main roles, but the movie is never really thrilling and is nothing to get too excited about.
Great movie, loved the performance and realism from everyone. Just gritty enough and not too dull like most prison movies. The handpicked actors were almost perfect, yes, even Tom Arnold fit a good representation of a middle-upper class father who can't help a son at a time where certain countries just decide to get tough on crime, sometimes the wrong crimes and the wrong people.
Steve Buscemi directed it and it shows, he's a very experienced actor who knows a thing or two about pulling a good performance out of gritty/funny roles.
I found this film pretty boring. It mostly shows what life in prisons is like. If you want to see a good film like that, I'd say Shawshank Redemption is a way better option.
great prison movie directed by steve buscemi. he knows if your gonna make a prison movie get danny trejo, it never hurts to have the real deal on set, great performances by willem dafoe and surprisingly edward furlong. they make this look downright real. impressive
This was a very good prison film especially seeing as how it was Steve Buscemi's first and if I'm certain only shot at directing. This was a movie that hasn't ever really gotten a lot of attention but really is a great film with an awesome cast.
Edward Furlong gives a great performance as a 21 year old sent to prison for the first time and completely unaware of what he is getting into. But he becomes friends with a character played by Willem Dafoe and Dafoe gives yet another great performance. Something that we have gotten used to seeing out of him. Dafoe teaches Furlong all about prison and the things you have to do to survive. Other great acting jobs in this movie were given by Danny Trejo and Mickey Rourke. Mickey Rourke plays a cross dresser in this film and man does he make an ugly woman.
All in all a very good underground film that not many people have heard of full of great performances.
There's nothing wrong with this; it's well cast, well acted and well scripted, but it's very average because it never really reaches different depths. A bit one-dimensional.
Willem Dafoe and Eddie Furlong say 'Hasta la vista, baby' to originality in this pic that proudly boasts Every Prison Drama Cliche in the Universe. See this only if you're interested in watching SPOILER ALERT Tom Arnold finger John Connor's asshole.
This is quite an impressive piece of work. Buscemi did a wonderful job directing a stunning cast. I'm not one to watch prison movies, but this was a real treat. Willem Dafoe is a beast!
This prison flick was ok but really could have been a powerhouse considering the talent involved excluding Furlong of course. Eddie should have had the hell beaten out of him numerous times but no... This should have been a gritty violent prison movie but it turned out WAYYYY too soft. Worth a watch but really nothing special. Look for Mickey Rourke in a messed up small role. The HBO series OZ is what this movie could have and SHOULD HAVE been. Rant over.
An above average prison movie. Furlong is awesome in it as the teenage dealer caught up in a prison for much more violent inmates. The relationship between him and Dafoe is facinating given the environment.
