Immediately banned in many countries after its release, Joe D'Amato's Italian Gore Classic "Antropophagus" of 1980 is a truly disturbing and immensely scary video nasty, and fans of ultra-violent and nasty Horror should not be disappointed. Potential viewers have to be warned, ho...( read more)wever: You need a strong stomach for this! The uncut version of "Antropophagus" features some of the most graphic and disturbing and goriest acts of violence you will ever see in a movie, and if there was a ranking of the most disturbing gore scenes ever brought to screen, this sick little flick would easily make it in the top 10! I don't want to give the most shocking scenes away, but I assure that anyone about to watch this flick can prepare for extremely horrid gore scenes.

A couple of tourists travel to a Greek island which they find deserted at their arrival. It quickly becomes clear that something evil is haunting the place. Something with an appetite for human flesh...

Whether you like it or not, "Antropophagus" is a movie that you will not forget quickly! In case you don't like gore this is not your type of film, but in case you do, avoid any censored version and watch this extremely scary Cult-sicko uncut. There is simply no point in watching cut versions of Exploitation-King Joe D'Amato's movies, and "Antropophagus" in particular is a movie that is intended to shock, so the uncut version is essential. Apart from its shocking violence, "Antropophagus" maintains a very scary atmosphere, and its cast includes many familiar faces for Italian Horror fans, such as Tisa Farrow and George Eastman (whom Spaghetti Western fans might also know).

In case you are easily offended, avoid this movie! But if you're a fan of Italian Gore films and Exploitation, you should certainly not miss this one! I advise my fellow Horror-fans to get a beer, lean back and start to enjoy the sick imagination of Joe D'Amato... When the movie reaches its climax, you will only be using the edge of your chair!

Although overrated, Antropophagus is a decent slasher and a fair entry for Italian gore horror. It's slow, though - very slow, and very talky, and the payoff may not be worth the wait for some viewers. Indeed, considering Antropophagus' nasty reputation, the gore is fairly ligh...( read more)t, especially compared to other films made around the same time. Still, it's not bad, and if you can find it there's no harm in giving this one a shot.

i think i must've seen the cut version which can't have helped my rating. i don't remember anyone getting their fetus eaten or anything that sickeningly funny? what i do remember from last nights viewing was that watching this film keeps you tense almost from start to finish. so ...( read more)it does its job! i liked the idea of the blind girl being able to smell the evil one when he's near. the italians did a few cheap cannibal flicks back in the day and this one aint too bad

Epic sleaze from the master of the genre, D'Amato. It's your old standard tale of a group of (not quite) young people vacationing on a Greek Isle who run afowl of a madman who, after nearly starving to death, ate his wife and their infant child. Now he's insane and wants to mak...( read more)e the young people his dinner. What a trashy, mad, gory, clumpy and dumpy film this is. Yes, and how wonderful. For the lover of Italian sleaze horror in all of us (well...some of us, at least...)

The movie has blood, gore, or brutal death sequences that are not easy forgetable. "Antropophagus" is a suspenseful movie that creates a creepy atmosphere based on an eerie Greek ghost town, an easy to follow but interesting plot, and believable performances.

The Grim Reaper as this movie was called in English film markets was director Joe D'Amato's first true foray into the horror genre. Previously he had made Sexploitation horror movies, which were big during the 70s. Although being his first true horror film this film will forever ...( read more)go down into the annals of horror history as one of the more sick and twisted works ever to be released. The plot of this movie revolves around a group of tourists that are taking their vacation on a small Greek island. Once they arrive on the island they discover that it has been totally deserted. The only person upon the island that they come across is a blind girl who doesn?t know what has happened to the rest of the townspeople but does describe a man who has interacted with her, she says that he smells of blood and is frightened of him.
As the tourists start getting picked off one by one by said man that smells like blood, they decide to take action. The survivors start looking for clues as to what is exactly happening on the island. During their search they discover a diary, which tells the tale of a man who was shipwrecked on the island with his wife and child. In order to survive the ordeal the man was forced to cannibalize his own family. He was driven mad by his actions and killed the rest of the people on the island when he found them.
By the end of the film there are only a few survivors left and they battle and defeat the crazy man. He is hit in the stomach with a pickaxe and as his guts spill out he attempts to eat them, chewing on his own intestines before he succumbs to his own demise.
When this film came out many media outlets proclaimed that it was a snuff film due to one particularly brutal scene. In the extremely notorious scene, he strangles a pregnant lady to death and then pulls the fetus from her stomach and devours it. The filmmakers proved that the effect was created using a skinned and cooked rabbit covered in fake blood but the film is still banned in many countries all over the globe to this day.

hilariously bad of course but the second act dragged on and on and on. it could have been worse and by worse i mean better, obviously. but i will not cast it aside entirely. some scenes are purely cinematographic achievements for a porno director.

Flat out 5 stars for the visceral italian style gore in the vein of Dr. Butcher M.D. and Fulci's Zombi. Joe D'Amato lets loose his exploitation, world wide banned masterpiece with comic book blood, shaky cameras, a skinned rabbit along with one forced abortion you have to see to ...( read more)believe. The backstory of the title creature is told through one meager backstory but it is enough to set your teeth on edge. The two disc uncut edition can be picked up for about 15 bucks. The special features are nothing to orgasm about, but if your a film fan/freak like me the extra tidbits delivered by the late D'Amato on the origin of the film are interesting enough. Worthy of mulitple views.

The perfect slasher film. The Italians at the time of this release where mainly known for three things: Giallo, ultra gory Zombie flicks or shocking Cannibal features. While the slasher genre was taking off in the US thanks to the success of Halloween and Friday the 13th it was t...( read more)ime for Joe D'Amato to step in and show the world the Italians can deliver slasher greatness too.
The amazing island location and gore scenes are what make this so special to me. Damn! The taking of a fetus from a pregnant womens womb and then the eating of it by the killer near the end was superb. It is definitely one of those WTF moments in film. Man, he doesn't cut her open to get to it he actually shoves his hand up her snatch and pulls it out! Every genre fan has got to see this early 80's classic.

Why do I keep attending these midnight shows? I saw this one expecting cheesy gore fest. But Anthropophagous makes little sense at times, my version had the oh so sought after gore scenes of the slasher/monster character pulling a fetus out of a women to eat it and him attempting...( read more) to save himself by eating his own guts at the end. So yeah, those clips are probably on youtube so you can go watch them there. Otherwise, it's typical slasher fair, there's totally no flair at all in characters. The scares are typical cats on pianos, long shots of skeletons covered by rats, people being bitten and our killer looking like a hobo version of John Carpenter. Sorry atmosphere-fans, these films are just a lump of sugar. Having all dull as dishwater gore and no scares or characters is as bad as musical without good songs.

I doubt I'll have to see another Joe D'Amato film again.
