After a world war devastates the Earth a Utopian city of the future is the subject of a power struggle between the benign genetically engineered clones and suspicious human military that inhabit it. Appleseed is 100% Japanese Anime in that is literally a Manga comic brought to li...( read more)fe with all their inherent strengths and weaknesses. The visuals are absolutely glorious; the opening which can best be described as a Wachowski inspired take on the future scenes of The Terminator and climactic battle sequences are absolutely breathtaking. The CGI may be a little dated in the fast moving world of technology, but this is an example where computers are used in an inventive and creative way, rather than painstakingly trying to recreate reality; I personally could not give a crap whether every hair on a characters head moves realistically or not. This combination of cel-shaded characters and fabulous Japanese production design is far more pleasing to my eyes. The action scenes are brilliantly done, directed in a frenetic and thrilling way and yet are also very clear and easily followed. Bay, are you listening? Unfortunately, as usual the "explanations" that link these superb sequences tend to be overly convoluted techno-gibberish but the astonishing visuals and action more than make up for the shortcomings in the plot. If you want some robot-orientated ass kicking without the Bayisms and bimbos, this should be your first port of call.

Can't believe I've neglected to review this!!! Maybe it's just that a movie like this, I had too much to say and put it off for too long. It's an incredible CG action flick, the characters actually provoke emotion in the audience, the visuals are all stunning, and the plot is app...( read more)ropriately complex. Such a great movie and must see for anyone into anime or scifi.

A very good movie, blends CGI Backgrounds, with almost cell shaded like characters. the look flows very nicely and has some decent martial arts action. very well made

Its style compromised its substance. I wasn't a fan of its style of animation it felt rigid especially for the characters making them look indifferent and stale.
I applaud the film makers for creating a film that is a milestone in animation and something different for anime.

Although Appleseed has some of the best animation I've ever seen in a motion picture, it lacks something, not to mention the overall melodramatic tone. The plot is not justified as enough as I wanted to, and its elements have already been used millions of times before. However, t...( read more)he pacing and the action scenes are spectacular, and turns out to be a must-see for any sci-fi/action or anime fan out there. Good effort.

Una distopía con cielo azul, cuando todos parece lido y luminoso, puede ser poque se niega a ver lo que hay debajo, interesante animación 3D con técnica cell sheading, igualnmente se recomienda antes leer el manga, bastante bueno por sí solo.

A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Has a plot that frolics in the no-man's land between fiendish complexity and utter incomprehensibility. full review
