As usual with Kitamura, too much build up and weak pay-off.

If Akira Kurosawa and Rod Serling made a movie together, and Neil Gaiman was asked to update the screenplay for a remake, this would be it. It's a short B film and incredibly artsy. If you've seen "Versus", you'll notice that Kitamura seems to be stuck on a certain concept. Masay...( read more)a Kato is like an Asian Matt Dillon, although he looks about as Asian as I do.

The fighting was good, the story dragged a bit, but like all films from this director, the ending leaves you wanting more.

Plenty of fun but by no means Kitamura's masterpiece. They had a great idea, there are no faults in the acting and who doesn't love a nice claustrophobic samurai movie? The problem is, such confined sets need to be compensated for with substance, and there are not enough layers t...( read more)o 'Aragami' which just makes it feel a little suffocating. You feel there ought to have been more twists of originality along the way, but it's nonetheless terrifically directed by the God of Japanese cinema AND a fucking kickass ending is to be expected by any Sakaguchi fan. Good, but really nothing on 'Versus'...

8/10 It was a dark and stormy night....

Short film..but is more of a good thing then a bad. Director(Kitamura) has a bad habbit in all of his films of building...building some more...build after that...LETS GO CRAZY..nope just kidding..keep building..Till you want th...( read more)em to throw off the gloves and go bat **** allready. Its forgiveabe cause he does such great films otherwise. Great chars .great sets, etc. Pluss their not so heavy handed in this one as a lot of films like it I see.. You can be gloomy and still be edgy.Thing I really liked was the persona of the main villian(?) in the story. Hes WAY wasnt all uber evil... just relaxed, even silly in a way, wanting to get the most out of his guest/victim as he could. The sceene with the hero choising his wepon was priceless.
All and all a good film

One half of 'The Duel Project'.

This film had to be shot in seven days. Using three cast members, one set and have the one premise, a fight to the death!! I enjoyed it, but then i like these kinda films anyway. The sword fights were good also! Which is always a plus with me. T...( read more)hough i'd expect no less from director Ryuhei Kitamura. This guy loves his swords!

Oh and a great little cameo from Tak Sakaguchi which i was well chuffed with!!

Unfortunately loses a halfstar for the "Great Potential" ending that doesn't get shown and the fact it takes so long to get to the final fight. However, the slow burn is really nice if you have no idea what the movie is about. And the combat - sweetness. :D
