Plot:
*W.I.P.*
Actually, this is a recap of the four OAV (which I've seen) into one movie feature (which I haven't seen and don't plan to).
Their treatment of a Martian colony was surprisingly in line with what I would expect. Granted, it wasn't all _science_ fiction, but it was pretty close.
The interesting thing about this movie though, is the question it poses about what constitutes sentience, or life. There are androids walking around that would pass a Turing test with ease, are they alive? Do they have rights?
Unfortunately, it's like they wen't over budget on a fight scene which had nothing to do with the actual plot, and forgot the more interesting philisophical questions.
I can't say I believe this is a great movie, yet something keeps bringing me back to watch it over and over again. I've debated selling off my copy several times, but each time I watch it, to help make my final decision, I always end up putting it back on my shelf. It's definitely thought provoking and there's something oddly beautiful about the world that's been created in Armitage. It's not quite as deep as Ghost in the Shell, but in some ways that makes it more entertaining when you're looking for something light. In the end I think it's just an enjoyable science fiction movie that deals with a lot of themes and ideas that are frequently glazed over by most other films.
Alright, Armitage kicked serious ass in this film. And Keifer Sutherland was fabulous as usual. I'd like to know the science behind robot sex, but maybe that's just me.
(Viewed Japanese Version) Very little character and uninvolving action scenes make this a real snooze-fest.
