this movie is based on a series of books, the movie is not action filled, which makes it a bit slower but at the same time it makes you feel like it is the time period, not the speed as it is today, it is a lot of mixture in the language, not sure about the subtitles on the movie, so if there is no subtitels i don't think someone that don't know swedish will get to much out of it
Ok, for everyone who thought that this was a slow and cheesy movie altogether: JAN GUILLOU IS SLOW AND CHEESY!!! This is exactly what it is supposed to be! The author of this story (Jan, mentioned above) loves being unbearably slow and sometimes even boring. But that doesn't mean that it's a bad story, it doesn't mean that it's an action movie just because there are war sequences, it's about romance and surviving, CAN'T YOU GET THAT INTO YOUR THICK SKULLS??!!?
Ahem. Deep breaths.
I didn't love this movie, but it irritates me that people judge it without knowing what it's ment to be. I haven't read the books but I've been bored to death with documentaries about the books, theories around the book and sneak peeks of the movie itself. This movie is the largest movie in Swedish movie history. No wonder that the hype was as huge as it was despite the fact that the actual film didn't turn out a masterpiece, and honestly... I can't wait to see the second one. Mostly because I've met Joakim Netterquist and thinks that he's gorgeous. But only in the beard.
There. I've said it.
I'm so glad that I found this movie here. I don't like my home-country-movies orginally but this is great. I like movies that don't taking place in our time.
This movie does have potentional. The actors are OK, the surroundings and environments as well. Armour looks just right, horses and bulidings too. So why? Why spend one boring hour with the kids story and yet another boring hour with the love-story from hell? Watching Sven-Bertil Taube's mustasch for 20 seconds gives more entertainment then the first two full hours. a Pity.
Så bra så :) Tycker mycket om den och mindes tillbaka på böckerna. Såklart inte riktigt lika bra som böckerna men lättare att hålla koll på sammanhanget :)
A Scandinavian film based on the fictional character of Arn Magnusson and one of his crusades as a Knights Templar. The story is set from the Middle Ages, and tells the story of his life, his love, his relationship with the true king of Sweden and how the young boy became a Knight Templar.
I think the story is a bit complex, perhaps most especially if youre not familiar with the swedish literature, but if you loved the Kingdom of Heaven then you will most definitely like this movie.
I cant believe people have rated this just with 3 1/2 stars! The acting was good, and when the movie ended I was like, what? Noo! I want more!! Maybe the general rating for this is only 3 1/2 cuz the story isnt very well known?? Or perhaps its because I havent really read the books yet?? Im confused, I actually found it to be a good film, its a very impressive swedish film and I cant help but wonder if Hollywood tried to rip this off with Kingdom of Heaven. I still have a lot of questions regarding Muslims and Jerusalem... I wish someone would answer them really.
For the bookworms, try to see The Knight Templar (Crusades) Trilogy by Jan Guillou. - Vägen till Jerusalem (The Road to Jerusalem), Tempelriddaren (The Knight Templar) and Riket vid vägens slut (The Kingdom at the End of the Road). -- Ill try to grab a hold of the books too when I can. :P
Kindly to know the world, We all can understand how's the nature in life. A peace land, A lovely heart, a angle smile,.......if you enjoy the little things in life. Life can be peace. We don't like the war, God tell us , life is everythings.
In terms of cinematography, directing and overall production, this was quite impressive for being a Swedish creation (and I should know because I'm a Swede myself). Unfortunately I haven't read any of the books by Jan Guillou, but after seeing this I kind of wish I had now, since the story of the knight templar Arn, turned out to be more intriguing than I had first anticipated.
The movie also depicts a piece of ancient swedish history, which became the most prominent selling point for me really, as it's an era I personally don't know that much about. It made for an interesting watch, and made up for the abundance of clichés found in the script. I was also very fond of the music score, as it reminded me a lot of the work by Howard Shore. Not as memorable perhaps, but ear candy nonetheless.
On the negative side, however, there were a lot of things that weighed down my final rating for this film. The first of which being the obvious lack of action. Most of the scenes were also annoyingly blabbery, which would have been fine if the dialogue was well-written, but since it was of very banal nature, I often found myself impatiently waiting for swords to be drawn and horses to be ridden into battle, rather than paying heed to anything the characters had to say.
As for the few action-scenes it had, well, they were pretty much over before they ever had the chance to become exciting, which is not all too surprising considering the director's lack of experience with big-budget productions. Still a decent and worthwhile film on the whole though, even if it's hardly something I'd wanna watch again.
If you're expecting action you will be disappointed. There's a lot of slow scenes with talking and sometimes it gets too cheasy. Overall a great story with beautiful environments. Despite it's length I found it enjoyable all the way and I'm looking forward to the sequels.
I did expect a bit more of this movie. It did not get me excited really. Although it is the second nicest movie ever made in sweden ;) (after "commander hamilton")
Like always i have not read the books once again but i like historical movies. This movie was quite decent and well made for being made in sweden. The story follow Arn the knight templar in war and love.. There are actually more talk and romance than action in this flick. I had hope for big battle scenes but they were quick ended so i got disappointed.. Anyway overall this an average adventure movie in my opinion.
I liked the 13th Warrior because they didn't speak their scandanavian language through the whole movie. I really dislike subtitles if I can avoid them.
biggest movie in swedich movie industry. 127 miljon swedich kronor have been put in to this movie it's big. it was good but not as i thought. i have read the books that this movie is based on so i had expected something more.
A rather OK movie, I have read all the books about Arn so I was prepared that the movie should be a little bit slow and sometimes even boring. If you haven't read the books you might yawn a couple of times. The movie is a mix of love, religon and fight for the crown. You notice that this isn't a Hollywood production because the big battle between the knight templars and Saladin wasn't so spectacular I was hoping, it was over after a few minutes :-( But are you interested in swedish history or a love story, this one might be something for you.
A disappointment, despite lowering my expectations after reading the books. I believe they miss a vital part of the theme in the books, about the creation of the Swedish nation. Instead they focus on a simple love story and the crowd-pleasing part of Arn as a Templar.
What a good movie! This is entertainment at it´s best. Love the story about Arn, it´s very touching. I love that it´s about the history of Sweden as well. The actors couldnt be better, they fit like a glow in their characters. Now I´m looking forward to see the next!
I highly recomend this movie to all of my friends here on Flixter.
