The scenery and effects were probably amazing to the 50s audience who hadn't seen many exotic locals. I've also heard that a main reason for this film's popularity were the massive amounts of cameos by various celebrities. I like to think that through my goal to watch Oscar win...( read more)ning movies that I can recognize quite a few well known stars, but all these cameos are a gimmick and they don't carry the story. Where does that leave the story? It's choppy and barely sustained through the 80 days.

Charming epic comedy with gratifying special appearances by some cinema legends. David Niven plays the quintessential english gentleman, but Cantinflas is the one who steals the show, as he always did in his native mexico. great entertainment.

I gotta say the production costs and budget must have been ASTRONOMICAL on this film.I can understand going to all of these places and wanting it to show in the final product, but some of the shot length was ridiculously long. Several times I was thinking, 'really, are we still w...( read more)atching this? I get it. It's a bull fight/ Japanese market/ Native American fight. etc'. I think it could have been edited down severely and the meaning and weight of the shot would have not been affected. But it was still very visually entertaining held my interest pretty well for its length. Oh, and the cameos were nice... kinda like a Where's Waldo in the film.

Around the World in 80 Days is based on a Jules Verne novel of the same name. In this film a British man makes a large wager with a bunch of people that he can travel around the world in 80 days time. The film deals mostly with his journey. At the same time, the protagonist is be...( read more)ing chased by a police investigator who thinks he has stolen a large sum of money.

The film stars David Niven as the lead and Mexican comedian Cantinflas as his sidekick. Shirley MacLaine joins about midway through and Robert Newton plays the police inspector. In addition to the principle cast, the film has tons of cameos from famous people including Marlene Dietrich, Peter Lorre, Frank Sinatra, George Raft, Buster Keaton, and a whole lot more.

In terms of awards, this film won 5 Academy Awards including best picture. Overall, this was an okay film but not one I'd want to see again. There's some good effects and some good moments, but none of that leaves me any desire to see this again.

Captures the Jules Verne novel in an incredible and realistic way. David Niven performs the punctual Phileas Fogg as if he was the character come alive. Equally good and the main "spectacle" of the film is the performance by Cantinflas as the French manservant Passepartout. The...( read more) music is always in the style of the country that is currently being seen. Speaking of which the scenery and the cinematography is absolutely marvoulous with large cinescopic scenes capturing the fullest range of the lands being travelled through. The audience is allowed to experience foreign lands and traditions through this movie and have fun in the process. Adding to the fun is the multiple cameos within the film (producer Michael Todd is credited with coining the cameo role). The scenes flow smoothly together and the story never seems to lag - the director knows just how long to focus on scenery and then to move back to the story. An epic film that was picked as best picture by the Academy Awards, Golden Globe and most everyone else. One of the greats!
