MCT:July 17, 2007This classic Satyajit Ray movie is set in India iin 1943, amid one of the worst famines in history. The "distant thunder" here is WW2, which has caused the famine. An upper caste woman, ashamed of her husband, attempts to help her village. It plays out like a tragic version of the Lady Godiva myth.
