My first foray into the world of Bollywood cinema. It took a little getting used to. A lot of flash cuts and close-ups so that the story a bit too fast, especially at the beginning. And then there are the musical numbers, which spring up unexpectedly throughout the movie. But it's good music, all the leads are attractive, and it's an interesting story. If I can make it through nearly 3 hours of it, I guess I'm willing to give some more Bollywood films a shot.
Finest Bollywood production I've seen so far (and I am a Bollywood junkie!). The surreal, legendary, visually mellifluous feel enraptured me. It's reminiscent of Cocteau's delightful poetic excesses, in its way.
This was one of the best frreign films that I've seen Based loosely on the real life character in India's anceint history' of a ruler that later lead the movement and spread of Buddisum in India. Blood , guts..real!!
I have never been one for indian cinema, no real reason, but i picked this up for £2 at a shop one day and was amazed. Santosh Sivan really knows how to tell an epic story and turn a quite brutal historical tale into something beautiful. a good film, not advised for people new to world cinema, but a must see.
ooo man asoka ws so not good when he had a baby with another girl... and he left the othergirl.... but at the end he meets with her again the girl he first fell in love with.. and he saw her lil brother bbut the only thing is the lil brother had alot of arrows shot into his back...
like the songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this movie 3x in the theater. the song and dance numbers were distracting, but that is what you get in Bollywood. like this review says, the movie does its best when it is being real. beautiful sweeping landscapes and a great performance by Mr. Khan.
Lukas could have learned from this movie about a prince and his fall to darkness. The music segments are well done and some of the shots at end are amazingly framed and arranged.
My first Indian film. I was so proud of myself, expanding my horizons and all. The guy at the snack counter told me that music in India is highly regulated, so much so that nearly all films there are musicals. What he did not tell me was that this movie was FOUR HOURS LONG. And the singing.... They once broke out into song on the battlefield surrounded by dead bodies! Now, I appreciate all forms of culture. If this had been shorter, maybe. But I just kept thinking to myself, "This is unbelievable. When will it all end?"
EEerrgh i DID NOT like dis portrayal of king ashoka.... it was WWWAAAYYY 2cheezy for my taste. Don't knw why shahrukh did dis crapy version of a gr8 story!
i just love the songs the scenery the way shah rukh acts: how he is able to be silly and such a tyrant or be completely voulnerable and cruel! it is a great story i think at the end it leaves you sort of thinking "think before you act or see the consequences of your actions" it's really good!
