As remakes go this was quite good but it?s not a scratch on the original!

Why did anyone bother with this movie?
  • January 31, 2009
This movie reminds me of 'Hard Rain'. On New Year's Eve a police station comes under siege. Good cast.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this film. I didn't expect much, but it had a lot going for it. I really liked every character, and they all had genuine motivation for everything they did. The action sequences were really engaging and well shot, and the interactions between he...( read more)ro and villain were fascinating. Drea DeMatteo really surprised me in this- her range goes much furthr than Adrianna from the Sopranos. And Laurence Fishburne is really chilling as Bishop, the stone cold motherfucker. I even liked the peripheral characters, especially the macho chick in the prison cell. What really threw me about this movie was the ease with which the filmmakers killed off thier characters. It's really jarring to see a layered, interesting and likeable character take a bullet point-blank between the eyes. It happens more than once.

I feel the general rule for remakes, whether it music or films, is that you either have to do it very different or much better. This film to me was just as boring as the original and a bit of a waste of a film budget.

A great remake that didn't try and overtake its original. It took the same basic concept and style and took on its own story. The characters really worked in their own way. Ethan Hawke was great as usual and you had some good performances from John Leguizamo and Maria Bello. The ...( read more)action was done really well, not corny or unbelievable. The backstories were done really well and improved the overall motivation of the leads, when it could have been an unnecessary addition to the original.

good & real about bad cops - who can you trust? lots of snow to break in the new year...
  • August 24, 2009
Not as bad as I thought it would be...original is still far better though....

remake to john carpenter's film in 1976. plenty of cast(with polices, the convicts, & the villians)with ethan hawk(also role as cop in 2001 "training day")with laurence fishburn as cop killer as the team.

thanks Ja Rule you did a nice job acting in this one. i especially like how your characters name is Smiley when he so ovbiously is never smiling. was that an inside joke? get it, theyre all in prison. "inside" well thats enough. this is cliche' and Ethan Hawke is awesome.

Kurt Loder, MTV

The central problem with this [film] is its essential uselessness. It does its job, I guess. But the job was already done a lot better a long time ago. full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

A great deal of thought may have gone into the making of Assault on Precinct 13, but its tone and its rhythms are consistently out of whack. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Restores thirteen to its place as the unluckiest number. full review

Edward Havens, FilmJerk.com

The nuances which made Carpenter's movie work are missing this time around, leaving little more than just another excuse to have people shoot at one another for two hours. full review

January 19, 2005
Claudia Puig, USA Today

The film has an appropriately dark and gritty look, but it suffers from some glaring problems. full review

January 19, 2005
A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Don't avoid the new Assault on Precinct 13 because it's a remake. There are plenty of other reasons. full review

Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

Fans should appreciate the remake for what it is: a breathless little revisit to that old precinct house, expertly performed. full review

January 19, 2005
Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Matches a dingy urban setting with a compelling situation and throws in an ensemble of interesting characters who become even more interesting under stress. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Strong performances and a couple of new twists. full review
