Svoid sredi... is told in an unconventional manner (especially for Soviet films of the time) reminiscent of the films of Sergio Leone. The story recounts the many exploits of Shilov (Yuri Bogaryrev) who seeks to recapture a stolen gold shipment that belongs to the Red Army. During the Russian Civil War, the League of Nations cuts off credit to the Reds which means they have to pay for food in cold hard gold. So local party leaders hatch a plan to get their gold through bandit territory, choosing Shilov(Yuri Bogatyryov) for the perilous duty. So much so, he is found dead before he even has a chance to depart. Even then, they decide to go ahead with the plan. Except their plan is not as fiendishly cunning as they thought it was as the Whites steal the gold which is then promptly stolen by Brylov(Nikita Mikhalkov, who also co-wrote and directed), a bandit leader, who is not even aware of what he now has. "At Home Among Strangers, Stranger at Home" is a movie as awkwardly put together as its title is cumbersome, beginning with a prolonged musical opening before continuing with its story as viewed through constantly changing film stock. It is a shame because there is an entertaining movie lying beneath the almost incomprehensible surface and the overly complicated plot. And having seen other Soviet movies of this same era, none of them have the technical problems like this movie's.
