Note: Despite being predictiable, this Takashi Miike's masterfully directed drama manages to sustain one's attention and, by slowly unfolding the plot brilliantly uplifts the tension till its horrorish finale. Nevertheless, in the end, the overall sense of a lack is in the air as clear as a smell of a nice hot burritos from the joint on the edge of the town.
Expertly crafted to lead your mind into a maze of dark avenues. The content is disturbing enough while you're watching it, but may become more so afterward as you try to determine what was supposed to be real and what was not. This is now my favorite horror movie.
The infamous needle torture is more conceptually gruesome than it appears in practice at the end of this film, but the foot amputation by wire is kick-ass-sexy-hard-to-watch.
Slow start, but it is worth it. This is the only one where I could not watch the whole thing at the end. I turned my head, but it didn't help - I heard her finish.
Possibly my favourite to date of Takashi Miike's work. It appears to be quite a predictable film, but with this Director you know there is always going to be something a little bizarre, it also has it's fair share of gore.
The beginning was a little drawn out I felt, but I still didn't lose interest and one particular scene really made me jump (which I have to say is something rare for me).
If I could recommend you watching one Takashi Miike film, it will be this one.
Very good, but overrated. Eihi shiina and ishibashi were very good and deliver a solid performance, the atmosphere is fucking AMAZING and gets very tense near the end. Story is cliched but with some unique twists...it's a very good film, but it's not amazing.
Doesn't have the look or feel of a horror film until some time into the movie, and even then the fragments that find their way to the surface are more nightmarish and haunting than jump up suspense. Theirs a great looming sense of dread throughout, a...(read more)nd by the time it all boils over into a fever dream, with it's torture climax, where certain violent acts do represent important ideas about the film and it's characters. It was a great funny, surreal, psychological horror film, that leaves you more uncertain and uneasy than anything else. Director Takashi Miike, has made a disturbing, unique, and earnest film, in a genre, strapped for daring, honesty, and intelligence in it's portraits(at least in recent since the Ju-on Grudge ghost era began.) The femisist reading of the film as bieng the result of Japanese patriachy, is apparent, the "Audition" of which the film takes it's name is a reference to the protagonists attempt to find the "perfect" women, much the way one auditions actresses for a film. The role reveral(crucial in S&M as it is in horror films), comes late enough in the film so that the acumulated terror holds more force than the average "fright fest", and manages in more ways than one to insert itself under the viewers skin. For those interested in top quality Japanese horror and horror in general, this is essential viewing as well as one of director Takashi Miike's best films
Very few films merrit the term Unforgettable, however this does with flying colors. From the sad score, the storytelling, the rich cinematography, and the unrelenting violence, it isn't necessarily haunting, it's a masterpiece. From the gorgeous photography, to the seemingly ordinary and restrained composition during the violent scenes, Miike makes a great film.
It's not as good as I hoped it would be. Yes, it was very weird and disturbing but there wasn't enough to hold my interest. I even find some of the scenes to take too long.
Probably Miike's finest piece of work to date, one of those films where the vital revelations end up adding even more texture to the story rather than just being easy answers. Watch and learn Haneke.
Sick and twisted, loved it. A crazy attractive woman kills in some gorey way. A recommended horror, Japanese Horror is usually subtitled, but awesome. Takashi Miike is a great directer.
Bien hecha, pero acaba siendo un ejercicio de sadismo hacia la audiencia. / Well made, but ends up being just an excercise of sadism towards the audience.
deeper deeper deeper deeper!!!!!!!!!! if this movie doesnt disturb u even just alittle bit , then something is wrong with ya , you sick bastard hehehe miike rules..
This movie was okay but it just wasn't what I was expecting. I had heard so much about this movie that I was excepting some really terrifying horror film. It was creepy (and gross) but scary, not so much.
A lonely Japanese widower hatches a scheme to screen potential wives by holding an audition for a fake movie, but finds that the winner is not quite his dream girl. A very strange and artistic horror film that takes a long time setting up its dramatic scenario, then suddenly explodes with one of the most terrifying scenes of extended violence ever filmed. Not for the squeamish, but also not for those seeking nonstop gore and mayhem.
Okay...I was referred to this movie as I enjoy the Asian horror movies. For the most part of the movie, I was just sitting there wondering where the creepy is. Took some time for it to kick in, but when it did....creepy wasn't the only thing I saw, but disturbing as well. Very few movies make me flinch and this one was one that delivered to me a serious flinch. If you enjoy horror....especially Asian ones, and don't mind subtitles, this is worth seeing.
Now you prob got a reaction of WTF? to that..and thats about how to decribe this best.I found out about this film oddly enougf from a docmentarry about fav horror films from different famious peeps in hollywood. This one was suggested by Rob Zombie(this is also the film that got me into "Mikes films"). I admit most this film is build up.But unlikelike most films like this you arnt screaming for it to "get to the cilmax already" Starts with a simple premise..then the signs start showing up...signs something is REALLY wrong with the force here..About half way your screaming at the guy to notice SOMETHING...Yet the film keeps going on...as the dread builds and builds.... with you more and more aware of something REALLY bad coming down the pipe. When it finally comes loose and it flys free, you almost kinda feal burned because your not really shure what just hit you. This film will make you think twice the next time you say.."sweet little asian girl". Sweet film,a must see for any one with a desire to be taken on a rolercoaster ride in a film...Just watch out, that 1st dip is a doosie.
