Plot:
Bergmanesque.
Deep, rich, 3 course dinner of dark chocolate. Dysfunctional story with close up camera work. A great movie to discuss with friends.
Though it seems as a little movie with little amount of characters and settings, it is so powerful and intense that surprised me, really. The characters are so deeply developed that seem as real people with real emotions and memories. Acting is first class, one of Ingrid Bergman's greatest performances. Liv Ullmann is great as always. The script is perfect also. Another Bergman masterpiece.
want to see this because it won best foreign film with the NBR and best foreign-language film at the golden globes
Pretty bad. Possibily good for ppl with mother daughter issues.. but the mother is a real selfish bitch.
Emotionally devastating. Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman play Mother and Daughter and cinema has never been the same since. A beautiful chamber piece that truly feels as if the viewer is intruding where they do not belong.
One of the most complex and honest dramas made by Bergman, and almost everything happens between the same four walls.
I never thought it was possible to have two persons bare their souls onscreen. But these actresses tear their hearts (and each other) apart with power and realism, shocking and affecting any viewer who's ever had a major fight with his/her mother. I love how they throw their emotions at each other, like showing each other their souls with no hidden places. It's also a great example of the cinematic language, using a series of elements expertly, such as color, music and different shots that not only comment on the action, but expand, explain and are in themselves the action. It's not Bergman's greatest due to its rather limited scale: it's too tight and closed, but that also means it's an excellent drama that hits and shocks the viewer.
A story of two woman's very strange and strong emotions, that need a base in the audience to be really understood, otherwise, they can't go along with the characters in this deep emotional journey. So, watch this if you have serious mother and daughter problems, as they may speak for you.
remember the name of Sven Nykvist . is the director of photography in all movies of Bergman and other great filmmakers
nobody knows the women like the great bergman. each and every female character is an stereotype. I'm starting to love my ingmar!
This film had me riveted right to the seat, everything was different but it was so striking and touched me so much. One of the best drama on family I've seen, probably ever. Might I add, this film has one of the finest acting in cinema.
Not the best Bergman I've seen. It is excellent, but loses something, as it feels like a rehash of previous films in his oeuvre...
Seul Bergman peut rendre un film aussi puissant, triste et vrai avec seulement 4 personnages et un lieu. La puissance qui se dégage du jeu des acteurs et des dialogues est tout simplement parfaite. Un de ses meilleurs films.
Emotionally exhausting, but technically superb. It's frighteningly well-written, and the performances are amazing. Liv Ullmann in particular is breath-taking - but Ingrid Bergman is a goddess.
Bergman and Bergman! What a great match! I loved seeing these two great artist working together. Ullmann is also superb in this film.
Once again there is a family with torn ties and bonds! Then why do they carry on? Just hopeful for taking back what they've lost once?
A movie that cease your breath, reminding you actions are not the only cease breathing movies. It's more sophistocated and delicate than rubish actions!
Quite intense performances from both lead actresses. AA more human drama, asking the questions concerning how one mother's preoccupation w/herself and career affects the upbringing of her daughters, and her neglect.
I watched a long time ago... and got al my feelings out at once... Impact is the word for this relatonship... Ingrid is one of the last ladies of the cinema... ever.
Just barely out of my top 100 films of all time. This is an awesome film on the power of family relationships.
