Congratulations on James Cameron for creating a blockbuster that's actually a decent movie. For graphics and special effects, this movie gets 5 stars from me (and probably an Oscar from the Academy). But story-wise, it was really nothing special. It was a sappy love story conceal...( read more)ed as an epic action movie made in 3D to blow you out of the water and convince you it's a good movie. The performances are weak, the storyline is familiar, at times poorly and carelessly structured, very holed, and without the 3D technology and the glasses, it's like everything else we've ever seen from Hollywood, although in a shinier wrapper and marketed better.

But frankly, it can be enjoyable to no end. The 2 hours and 40 minutes fly by, and a whole new world is being created right in front of your eyes, and it makes you wanna be a part of it. So, for that, and for the environmental message, it has my 2.5 stars.

First off let me say, I knew this was supposed to be a big movie, yet I really paid no attention to it. Even in the trailers, I only remember seeing blue people. As soon as the film started, I was intrigued with what was going on. The visuals were fantastic! As the film went on, ...( read more)I knew this was going to become one of my favorites. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a film. =) Highly recommend it.

This movie is amazing all around! so so so good! I was sad that i didnt get to see it in 3-d but thats ok. It was still amazing! Also Zoe Sladans is amazing in the movie.
And Sam Worthington i believe him to be our generations Bruce Willis. He is a very very good action movie star. I cannot wait to see him in clash of the titans! You'll be seeing more and more of him to come!

Visually.... impressive. Music... James Horner needs no introduction. James Cameron? Excellent director.

All that plus then-some do combine to make this visual masterpiece. But honestly, the 3D was bullshit. I would have been happier with a normal 2D viewing.

Though it is gre...( read more)at story telling, Haven't we heard all this before? Pocahontas? Africa? Corporate greed? Wherever great nations invades, local people and cultures are destroyed? Well, this time the invaders get their asses kicked. And whats the thinly veiled hint at climate change destroying our world? Meh, the world is destroying us, and something that I always stress is that nature will overcome whatever advanced technology or society can do. It was great to watch and see nature take on and destroy man and its technology.

Anyways.... I give it 4 stars for the good experience and the quality, but 5 stars? This was seriously hyped up and it doesnt quite deliver the whole goods. There was something missing, that crucial element that makes a movie great. Titanic had the iceberg and the ship. The Dark Knight had the Joker and its first 5 mins. Terminator had Arnie. Aliens had aliens. King Kong had Kong. The Godfather had Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Lord of the Rings had New Zealand. The Last Samurai had Samurai and Ninja.

Avatar has.... Pandora? Perhaps. But honestly, CGI and 3D effects perhaps is the future, but movies like the Dark Knight who didn't use it that much, still prove that good old movie making is still what we want.

When Titanic was over, the entire cinema stood up and applauded. The Dark Knight, they all applauded. Even in Transformers (1) the entire crowd went nuts. And this was the same cinema, and people were sitting on the floor for the opening weekend.

Avatar? not so. I think people were slightly confused and disappointed - all I heard was good, but whats with the hype? Hmm... I just think people weren't ready for the amount of special effect, which was the entire film pretty much. Acting wasn't really a strong point, the only notable mentions is Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang for their very colorful and expressive characters.

It was interesting to see a whole alien culture, language and customs and traditions. But honestly, it was like seeing native African tribes, everything was nearly all too similar. Except for the animals...

which leads me to say, even though they looked great, all the beasts were just real animal bodies and heads and parts interposed on other bodies and parts. Like Hammerhead sharks' heads on Rhinoceros. Or giant moths with heads of a dinosaur. Or wild dobermans with their skin turned inside out. Interesting to look out, nothing special or new. And of course... they are big. But hell, Lord of the Rings was so much better - even the giant mammoths were unique in their own way.

Mechanicized infantry from Mech Warrior. Hover copters from computer games. You know, this would really make for an awesome computer game. But probably it would suck, like most games from movies adaptations.

This movie was... over hyped. It just wasn't special... nothing really new. Even the 3D and special effects were not new... just overused?

Special Effects and 3D cannot carry a movie, sorry to say. A love story, a war story, a clash of worlds.... somehow it was a bit o everything and it didn't meld properly. There was no real cohesion, nothing connected well together. It did move at a good pace, but it was choppy at times, like as if James Cameron chopped it with axe - very blunt.

I guess the final battle was climactic... but honestly, it was also.... pretty average. Ive had more climatic battles in Call of Duty Modern Warfare than this. Intriguing, but pretty forgettable.

And thats the final thing. Unless you've fallen for the hype, I'll remember this movie for being hyped and honestly trying to advocate 3D special effects... but I'll probably never watch it again. Like Titanic. Ive only seen Titanic from beginning to end only once.

I will watch the Godfather over and over again. I will watch The Dark Knight over and over again. Hell, I will watch Transformers (1) over and over again.

But this.... is forgettable. It made its big hoorah and I enjoyed my time watching it, but all it did was leave me feeling like I've been suckered to spend more on a giant screen and 3D. I just didn't care for the movie at the end. It was like any other big movie.

My FINAL PROGNOSIS? Cameron blew out the budget, on technology and such, so everything else became secondary. In the end, the accountants were running this movie, not the creative minds and it shows in everything that lacked.

4 Stars for some of the hype - one star off for being all the above. This is no big Oscar winner, except for Special Effects. And thats about it.

It has been so long since I remembered walking out of the cinema having one of those satisfied smiles on my face.

This movie must definitely be on the blog!

So what is this movie about? Just a bit of info (courtesy of Flixster)...

In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran...( read more), is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

In this setting, the humans are actually out into a different planet named Pandora wherein a valuable resource (a very expensive energy-emitting rock) is to be found there. The goal of the humans is to get these valuable rocks from the very core of one of the tribes living within the planet. And so in order to settle a diplomatic agreement, a group of scientists devised a way of communicating to the native. They did this by using an avatar controlled in the mind. Jake, was sent on this mission... Jake was brought to the tribe in order to learn their culture, language and way of life. Aside from that he is also working as a "spy". However, as time goes by something unexpected happened. So what happens in the story? Something amazing. Jake, instead of bringing the natives to their demise actually led the way for their survival. Jake fell in love with Pandora. He fell in love with the forest, the creatures, the life that flows in each and every organism in the planet... But most of all he fell in love with one of the villagers whose name I didn't forget, but absolutely it's a name I could not pronounce right.(So let's just say he fell in love with a Pocahontas). Jake didn't want to destroy anything from the Planet because he has already adopted the ways and thinking of the people. The natives think of the planet as one of them, as part of them. Each and every single organism in their planet is a creature with a soul, and therefore it must be respected... Everything is connected by an energy - a life force, just like how neurons in our body are also interconnected with each other. This is a remarkable thing to ponder upon. In the climax of the movie, you can see mother nature being devasted as the men with guns and bombs use destructive force to cause wrath and to get the natives to vacate the place. But who would want to leave their own home? Jake saw this chaos and he found a way to protect the people. He became a brave leader. He used his strength and will to mobilize the natives. He moved hearts, heightened spirits...and most of all he asked help from Aiwa (not so sure with the spelling) ...The Mother, The Life Force, The Core.

In the end, the natives won the war and the humans were brought back to Earth with the exception of a few who were willing to stay in Pandora.

Jake, then... being a paraplegic - left his true body and embraced his being an avatar!

I'm not really so sure, but I guess I under-detailed this story, there is still so much to splurge upon but it's too complex even for me.

All I know is - the movie would make you realize so much about our WORLD. About how we, as humans create our own planet's destruction. We seem to be blind about the essence of RESPECT and BALANCE. Respect that every creature has a energy... Balance that in everything we take, we must give something back.

I still feel like this review is not even halfway through in expressing how much I was deeply moved by the movie.

Anyways,. . . just watch it - and say: I SEE YOU.

Upon seeing U2 3D, I felt that 3D in the movie theater could actually develop into something more than a gimmick. AVATAR goes beyond that, treating 3D not as a novelty, but as simple immersion. Cameron, ever the storyteller as much as the technical whiz-kid, does an excellent j...( read more)ob of serving the story with the usage of the added dimensionality by placing you on the surface of the fictional Pandora. The forrest surrounds you, and seems real and palpable. Just as Jake is experiencing this world through his avatar's eyes, you are fully experiencing the world with him. Excellent story, well-written dialog, believable characters, incredible sound and visuals make this an event! Highly recommended!

Apesar da imensa propaganda em cima da revolução tecnológica, o melhor do filme se encontra justamente naquilo que pouco foi divulgado: a história.
