I don't typically like sci-fi, but I really enjoyed this! I saw it in IMAX 3D, and it was so much fun to watch. I didn't even notice how long it was. I didn't think Sam Worthington did the best acting job, but other than that it was good!

It's an epic, sci-fi action masterpiece. An extraordinary, fascinating, deeply moving and utterly spectacular adventure. A visually incredible and compelling film. It sets new standards for the genre and creates an amazing new world. Director, James Cameron is back and dosent fai...( read more)l to satisfy with his new vision that truly is a classic. A riveting, explosive and relentless action-packed thrill-machine. Some of the best special effects, digital creatures and action sequences that are like nothing you have seen before, it will astonish you in every way imaginable. It stands with awesome effects action films like Star Wars and The Lord Of The Rings. It's truly brilliant film making. It's heart-pounding, mind-blowing and exhilarating all the way to its outstanding finish. One of the best films of the decade, also one of the greatest action movie experiences ever made. There has never been anything quiet like Avatar, so it truly grabs you and dazzles you. Loaded with non-stop explosive action and amazing special effects. It definitely stands with Cameron's classic films like Aliens, Terminator 2 and True Lies. An magnificent all-star cast. Sam Worthington is outstanding, doing an amazing job in the lead role, just like he did proving himself in Terminator Salvation. Showing he's a compelling leading man and stellar action star. Stephen Lang gives an awsome and predatory performance.

Worthington portrays a nice character arch as his human paraplegic body loses the definition of a fit marine and his Na'vi body becomes a warrior. Saldana is sweet and protectively vicious when need be. Weaver is tough as a diplomatic scientist standing up to Ribisi the corpora...( read more)te man and Lang the military man, but is soft and gentle in her Avatar body. Her Avatar looks a bit more plastic than most of the others for some reason. My pick for the tough as nails female character goes to Michelle Rodriquez though. Lang is scary and grizzled. I can see the connections to movies like Dances with Wolves. I like that type of story where an outsider becomes immersed in another culture. I really appreciated the Native American, one with nature, interconnected web of existence, style of spirituality that the Na'vi have.

The movie is visually a spectacle!! The spectacular luminous, glow in the dark vegetation, and tree top or cliff edge world of Pandora is thrilling. It is the type of big epic movie for which 3D technology was invented. I like that this is not only a science fiction movie or a fantasy movie. I love the mixture of mythical fantasy elements and the high tech robotic suits and digital virtual touch screens.

A must see. And to truly appreciate the visual and technological beauty of this film...you really should see in 3D.

Unfortunately to spite the technological & visual majesty and an intriguing mythology, the film suffers from some painfully predictale plot lines and terribly t...( read more)rite caricatures. Pretty much the same problems that plagues most of Cameron's films.

I really wish the studios would start to insist that he spend a fraction of the time on his scripts as he does on his effects. His sole concern always seems to be the visual aspects of his films. But I guees money talks and as long as people will pay for the eye candy, everything else will remain unimportant in his mind.

Having said that, the visual aspects are truly AMAZING. You should really check this one out. Just don't expect anything too exciting in the dialog or character department.

    Exceptional.
Acting, direction, visual effects AND story are all totally solid.
    Three minor negatives
    - A few problematic (rather than clunky) lines of dialogue should have been trimmed - or not inserted: "I was kinda hoping you would say that" during the final fist fight springs...( read more) to mind.
    - The Leona Lewis / Syco song is a wholly unnecessary throwback to Titantic.
    - The James Horner score also recalled his work on Titantic and Aliens and failed to make an impression on me first time round. The overwhelming visuals may have something to do with this initial reaction though.
I would like to see a longer cut with some of the secondary characters' arcs fleshed out. I am sure Michelle Rodriguez filmed some more scenes for a start.
Awesome - will see again before posting full review
