A must see. And to truly appreciate the visual and technological beauty of this film...you really should see in 3D.

Unfortunately to spite the technological & visual majesty and an intriguing mythology, the film suffers from some painfully predictale plot lines and terribly t...( read more)rite caricatures. Pretty much the same problems that plagues most of Cameron's films.

I really wish the studios would start to insist that he spend a fraction of the time on his scripts as he does on his effects. His sole concern always seems to be the visual aspects of his films. But I guees money talks and as long as people will pay for the eye candy, everything else will remain unimportant in his mind.

Having said that, the visual aspects are truly AMAZING. You should really check this one out. Just don't expect anything too exciting in the dialog or character department.

70 years ago Hollywood wowed the world with the story of a little girl and her little dog toto. this film, i think, is intended to challenge that first film's grip on the collective psyche. HA. moments of exhiliratin visual yaaaahoooo (THAT KIND OF BIG WOW) mano y mano with pl...( read more)ot developments soooooooo hackneyed, sooooo bad, that your eyes will hurt with rolling in their sockets, and this after you realise that you WANT to love it. so it's 5 stars for looks minus 2 for vomit worthy plot choices. all of this doesn't change that this will still be an event.

This is not the greatest mind blowing movie ever made and it isn't a pile of dog crap made up of just pretty images. Its an entertaining movie made for the masses.

Not the Blockbuster I imagined, but entertaining enough.
The story wasn't that original, but the attempt is definitely worth a compliment.
Cameron created a beautiful world, and it held my attention the entire 2 hours and 40 minutes. Not the best movie of 2009, but it comes in b...( read more)efore 2012, Terminator 4 and Transformers. (Ok that's not entirely fair 'cause 2012 and Terminator 4 sucked *ss, but then again, what do I know about movies :p)

It was pretty to look at, but that only goes so far. There were a few witty moments, but overall the story was lacking just about anything creative, and without that real interest in the characters or plot, it just wasn?t as exciting as it could have been.

That said, the visuals...( read more) were very, very good. The entire world was probably more thought out than any this side of the Dune world and the CG as detailed as any Pixar movies you could imagine. But the 3D may have been a hindrance to enjoying the beauty of the ?real world? kind of animation. None of the animation bothered me, as I took it for granted as ?real?. But the forced focus of 3D annoyed me a bit. Maybe it?s because we wanted to blow it out and watched it in IMAX. I ended up doing my own pan and scan and would move my head more than any other recent movie I saw. It?s a good event movie, but it will stink at home (but I don?t have blu-ray).

"Do not watch Avatar - See Avatar."

Never before has a movie made me so emotional. Strong emotion welled up inside me about a half dozen times during this movie, and it was a struggle to hold tears back. It touched me like no other has done before. I felt someth

...( read more)ing great within me. It imposed a powerful sense of inspiration upon me. Avatar was an empowering movie that truly reached in and touched my soul. I love that.

I was young when I saw Star Wars for the first time and did not experience it as I may have if I was older, but I have a strong belief that the powerful emotional feeling Avatar gave me now, in 2009, was the same feeling that Star Wars gave so many others twenty years ago.

What made this movie so amazing was a combination of the acting and characters, the visuals, and the script, interacting on a level nearing perfection. It's not really something that can be explained, but rather something that must be experienced, must be felt. Every struggle, every folly, every misgiving, every success you feel connected with. I could not help but care for the characters as soulful beings rather than simply people fighting a power greater than themselves, overcoming adversity, mistrust, prejudice. Most of all I was enchanted by the character Jake Sully: he comes into a whole new world with nothing to lose, and quickly falls comfortably into a place where he knows what he wants and cares for those he interacts with. It is like he saw an opportunity to make a difference and make his life worth something - something more than anyone can imagine; something extraordinary. His narration also adds an extra connection to his feelings and mental struggle throughout the movie. Neytiri was equally enchanting, being very receptive of Jake early on after initial animosity, and forming a relationship with him to a level which we should all aspire to: A true bond, a true friendship, much like the Na'vi share with their world.

The graphics in this movie never feel computer generated - they are pseudo-realistic. Most of all, the Na'vi don't appear animated but look more like phenomenal cosmetic costumes. Their expressive facial details are very fine and skin texture is convincingly real. Everything, from the lush green forest to the vibrant wildlife to the enormous proportions of the setting to the colourful characters, is so real you wish you could really be there more than you feel you already are. You don't revel at the impressive graphics but rather find yourself admiring the marvellous landscapes we are taken to - because you believe them to be real. The fourth wall is simply the eyes of a third party amongst the magnificent world that is Pandora.

Aside the characters and visuals, the music brings it all together to form the whole emotional experience.

I do not have any harsh criticism for this movie, but there are a few minor complaints that are both good and bad in some way: there are a few plot holes that require more explanation, such as the importance of 'unobtainium'; everything on Pandora seems to be bioluminescent to some degree, which is unlikely, and its purpose is never accounted for; Norm's apparent jealousy of Jake is only brushed upon, but I offer commendation for this since his feelings could have developed into contempt and become a cliché good-to-bad antagonist. Perhaps some minor content was removed for the final edit that hindered flow, or was material that was disliked or deemed unnecessary.

Some will not be receptive of this movie due to the undertones of indigenity, tyranny, industrialism, and ecological preservation. Many will see it as a cliché storyline if they are narrow-minded and focusing on potential criticism. My suggestion is do not go into Avatar with expectations. Keep away from critical review. It will only instil feelings of disapproval toward the overused story mechanics or disappointment when your expectations are not met (such as what you may experience after watching a movie based on a favourite book you have read). The hype is warranted, but don't let your mind run away with Avatar's potential.

This is a movie that I will come back to over and over again. I hope you enjoy it as I did.
